摘要:
A rotary thermal diffusion column with the inner cylinder rotating and the outer cylinder static was used to separaten-heptane-benzene mixtures at different speeds of rotation. The results show that the column efficiency depends on the speed of rotation. For the optimum speed the increase in efficiency relative to the static column was of the order of 8%. The role of the geometric irregularities in the annulus width on performance of the rotary column is also discussed.

摘要:
A versatile solute purification cell based on the flow field-flow fractionation channel is described. Equations are obtained for impurity removal, mean solute residence time, and solute throughput. Experiments are described in which methylene blue was purged from a buffer stream and from a stream containing 10% albumin by weight using a 2.65-ml cell. Impurity removals up to about 98 to 99% were observed. Mean albumin residence time in the cell varied from about 10 to 60 min; 90% impurity removal was possible with a residence time of about 25 min.

Analysis of extensive distribution data taken in the synergistic system kerosene/HTTA/TBP/dilute HNO3indicates that the rare earths terbium, erbium, ytterbium, and lutecium are extracted into the organic phase as M(NO3)(TTA)2(TBP)2. The thermodynamic stability constants for the four metals in the two-phase system have been calculated to be 41 ± 10, 26 ± 10, 19 ± 10, and 14 ± 10%, respectively.

Mössbauer spectroscopic studies indicate that, depending on pH, two different precipitates are formed when appropriate solutions of iron ions are mixed with ethyl xanthate solutions. Below pH 3.5, ferric ethyl xanthate is obtained, regardless of whether ferric or ferrous reactants are used; ferrous xanthate can be obtained only with highly concentrated solutions and in strictly neutral or even reducing conditions. Above pH 3.5 a ferric hydroxy-xanthate, with one or more OH groups replacing the xanthate groups, is formed. No analogy with the Cu2+→ Cu+reduction and the accompanying stoichiometric oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen could be observed in the Fe3+→ Fe2+systems, in which dixanthogen is detected only as a product of ferric xanthate decomposition in alkaline pH's.

A two parametric mathematical model of carrier-mediated extraction is proposed for the case when emulsion technique is applied. Its simplified version, valid for diluted solutions, is solved analytically, and an implicit expression relating both parameters—rate of solute transfer and rate of emulsion destruction—is derived. Model parameters were evaluated from the experimental data obtained with two different three-phase systems: oil-in-water-in-oil and water-in-oil-in-water. In the first case, toluene and heptene were separated using water as an intermediate phase, and parameter evaluation was performed by means of an analog computer. In the second case, acetic, nitric, and hydrochloric acids were separated using a solution of tributylphosphate in carbon tetrachloride as a carrier phase. In this case the rate coefficients were found from the proposed implicit equation.

Feed throughput in preparative, steady-state two-dimensional chromatographic separations can be improved by injecting feed along a line that is slanted into the two-dimensional apparatus while solvent is continuously fed to the bottom of the apparatus. The local equilibrium model of adsorption is applied to the rotating annulus geometry to show that throughput can be increased without decreasing resolution. The model is then related to the solute trajectories, and the results for two-dimensional paper and gel permeation chromatography are derived. Two-dimensional countercurrent distribution is also considered and an exact solution is developed. The slanted feed line technique decreases thermodynamically irreversible mixing and thus is more efficient.
