摘要:
The fundamental expression for Rony's extent of separation in a 2-component system has been reexamined for any separation stage with respect to its relation with the traditional stage separation factor for a wide variety of separation processes. It has been shown that for a single entry or double entry rate governed barrier separation stage, the extent of separation is a composite index consisting of a stage capacity factor proportional to the barrier area and a stage enrichment factor (α − 1) or (β11). The latter-need not be close to zero. For a reverse osmosis and a gaseous diffusion stage, the extent of separation has been expressed in terms commonly used for these processes. The composite nature of the extent of separation has been also determined for batch dialysis, batch thermal diffusion, as well as for a single equilibrium stage, and related to known features of these separation processes in terms of stage capacity and stage enrichment.

Adsorption isotherms are calculated for precipitate and floc foam flotation within the framework of a Gouy-Chapman model which includes both the electrical attractions of the floc particles to the surface and their electrical repulsions for each other. The canonical ensemble is used, and algebraic expressions are found for approximating the sum of products of cluster integrals. Algebraic expressions for the surface excess of adsorbed floc are obtained which involve three reasonably simple integrals. The dependence of the adsorption isotherms on temperature, ionic strength, surface potentials of the floc and the air-water interface, ionic charge, and floc particle size is investigated.

Cellulose acetate membranes have been characterized in terms of pure water permeability, solute transport parameter, mass transfer coefficient, and percent solute separation with a reference system of aqueous sodium chloride solution. These membranes were used in the determination of reverse osmosis characteristics such as product rates and solute separation of zinc salt solutions. The importance of the chemical species present in solution and its effect on the degree of separation of the zinc salt has been illustrated. Correlation between the percent solute separation and the equilibrium constant for the formation of ion-pairs in solution has been established.

摘要:
Studies have been made of variables such as reagent concentration, acid concentration, pH, mixing time, settling time, volume ratio, and stripping in order to develop optimum conditions to extract cadmium from aqueous chloride and bromide solutions. A 4-ppm cadmium solution can be extracted essentially quantitatively with an equal volume of 5% Alamine 336-xylene solution in 15 sec. Aqueous to organic ratios up to 20 to 1 can be utilized without loss of extraction efficiency. More than 98% of the extracted cadmium can be stripped from the nonaqueous layer with a series of aqueous strippants including 0.1MEDTA, 1MNaOH, and 2.5Mammonia.

Papers impregnated with stannic molybdate have been used to chromatograph various amine hydrochlorides in varying concentrations of aqueous sodium nitrate and hydrochloric acid solutions. Variations in experimental parameters in recycling chromatography have been investigated. The effects of column length, column outlet pressure, support mesh size, carrier gas flow rate, and capacity ratio on the maximum number of cycles have been determined for a single component. The maximum number of cycles was obtained under conditions which minimized effects of gas compressibility. These conditions also caused the number of theoretical plates to increase linearly with cycle number for a larger fraction of the time before the sample overflowed the volume of one column.

A high-precision gas chromatograph was used in conjunction with a quadrupole mass filter and an on-line computer to study the fractionation of oxygen isotopes by Porapak T and glycerol in CH3OH and CD3OH as a function of temperature. Values of relative retention on the order of 1.002 compared favorably with results for the vapor pressure ratio obtained by classical means. Differences from unity were much smaller for the activity-coefficient ratio than for the vapor-pressure ratio. Differential thermodynamic data were also reported.

摘要:
Stannic arsenate thin layers (0.25 mm) have been applied for the chromatographic studies of 42 metal ions without using any binder. As a result, some important binary separations, such as Cd-Sb, V-Nb, V-Ta, Ni-Fe, Pd-Nb, Hg-Pb, and Pb-Mo, have been performed. Quantitative separation of Hg from Cd, Zn, and Cu has also been made by this technique. The study has been found to give reproducible results on refluxed and nonrefluxed samples of stannic arsenate used simultaneously.
