摘要:
The definition of Murphree point efficiency in distillation is critically examined. Characteristics of Standart's stage efficiency definition are utilized to define a new point efficiency on a plate in a column. This new definition was shown to be consistent and symmetrical. For crossflow on a plate, the proposed point efficiency was found to be equal to Standart stage efficiency subject to only the assumption of a uniform value of the proposed point efficiency over the whole plate.

摘要:
Open-cell polyurethane foam has been shown to be effective in separating gallium and iron from aluminum in acid chloride solutions. Evidence is presented which indicates that the solid organic polymer acts as a “solvent extractor” for complex acid chlorides of gallium and iron.

Microcrystalline cellulose as an absorbent in inorganic thin-layer chromatography has been successfully applied to the separation of various ferrocene derivatives and organometallics containing cyclopentadiene. The effect of gross dielectric constant versus theRFvalue is also discussed as well as the analogy between silica-gel chromatographic separations.

摘要:
A nonequilibrium continuous pump was experimentally investigated using the model system NaCl-H2O on an ion exchanger. A simple method for predicting separation is presented and is found to be in good agreement with experimental results. The criterion for approach to equilibrium operation, where large separations are possible, is also established.

Several criteria are suggested for measuring the effectiveness of separation systems (chromatography, electrophoresis, etc.) in one and two dimensions in the presence or absence of gradients. A major point is that resolution is truncated so that if two peaks are separated by more than some sufficient amount, ΔS, their effective separation remains constant. This eliminates overemphasis on large separations which tend to obscure less well-separated peaks. It is shown that the qualitative behavior of at least two of the suggested class of criteria are similar, and that the criteria are insensitive to arbitrary parameters over a wide range. Illustrative examples are given from one-and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, including the effects of pore gradients and/or ionic detergents (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate).

摘要:
Batch 316-type cellulose acetate membranes were characterized in terms of pure water permeability constant, solute transport parameter, and mass transfer coefficient with a reference system of aqueous sodium chloride solution. These membranes were used in the determination of reverse osmosis characteristics such as product rate and solute separation in the case of uranium sulfate solutions of different concentrations (100 to 8000 ppm) in the feed solutions. A long-term test extending over a week has been carried out with dilute uranium solutions. Reverse osmosis treatment of synthetic mine water sample showed satisfactory performance of the membranes in the separation of metal ions.

We consider the utility of the usual definition of the resolution of two peaks in chromatography in terms of the height of the valley between the two peaks. We show that over a wide range of relative amounts and bandwidths, the separation requirementR= 1 is very conservative.

Affinity chromatographic conditions have been developed that allow the separation of chemically modified α-chymotrypsins with reduced esterase activities compared to native α-chymotrypsin. This technique should be useful in purifying modified proteins having altered affinities for an affinity absorbent.

Three methods are developed for the calculation of adsorption isotherms in precipitate and adsorbing colloid flotation. The Gouy-Chapman model is used in all three, with corrections for the effective volumes of the ions in the ionic atmosphere and of the floc particles. The theories all predict a weak dependence of adsorption isotherm on temperature and a stronger dependence on ionic strength; increasing either variable decreases the surface adsorption. The effects of film surface potential, floc zeta potential, ion and floc effective volumes, and floc-floc screening are examined.
