摘要:
Ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, indium and platinum have been separated from a single spot in horizontal paper electrophoresis using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as background electrolyte. Electrograms were run using 0.01Melectrolyte, at pH 9.0, 10.5, 11.0 and 12.0. Binary, ternary, quaternary and quinary separations are possible at various pH values, but best separation occurs at pH 11.0. At this pH, ruthenium and osmium slightly overlap with each other and can be separated by cutting this zone and placing it on a fresh paper and carrying on the electrophoresis, now using 0.1MEDTA at pH 6.0. Ruthenium and osmium can thus be separated from each other on the second paper. The temperature is kept at 20°C, a potential 250 V is supplied, and the developing time is 3.5 hr.

摘要:
The rate of generation of variance,dσ2/dX, is a fundamental parameter which determines peak or boundary width and, thus, resolution in many differential migration systems. This parameter can be identified with the “plate height” of chromatography. By extending this nomenclature and the underlying concepts to electrophoresis and sedimentation, we arrive at parameters, particularly the “number of theoretical plates,” which allow a comparison of the effectiveness of these diverse methods. Equations are derived for the plate number as well as for resolution and peak capacity. Numerical comparisons are shown. Optimization is discussed with reference to maximum resolution, peak capacity, and separation speed.

摘要:
A laboratory procedure is described for the separation and recovery of the constituents in NbCl5-NbOCl3mixtures. The method outlined is based on the difference in solubility in liquid nitrosyl chloride of the addition compounds formed by niobium(V) chloride and oxychloride with NOCl. Following isolation of the nitrosyl complexes, thermal decomposition leads to regeneration of the original chlorides. The procedure can be conveniently applied to several grams of mixture in any proportion and permits recovery in nearly quantitative yield.

摘要:
Papers impregnated with titanic tungstate have been used to chromatograph 52 cations in 45 aqueous and mixed solvents. Experimentally, a large number of complex cation separations have been achieved easily and rapidly—Au3+, Tl3+, Ag+, Mo6+, K+, Rb+, CS+, Ni2+, Sb2+, Bi3+, Be2+, and Tl+can be easily separated from numerous metal ions. Several quaternary, ternary, and binary separations have also been achieved, and some important separations are discussed.

The feasibility of using amino acids as retaining agents with ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) eluents in displacement chromatography of the rare-earth elements was studied at 85° to 90°C. Hydroxyethyl-ethylenediaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA) and diethylenetriaminepeuta-acetic acid (DTPA) were the most effective retaining agents investigated. Elements of atomic numbers 39 and 57 through 68 were effectively retained, whereas elements of atomic numbers 69 through 71 passed through the retaining-agent band. Utilization of HEDTA or DTPA as retaining agents permits the use of 7 to 10 g/liter EDTA eluting solutions, whereas eluting solution concentrations in the 4–4,5 g/liter range are maximum when using hydrogen or copper as retaining agents. Eighty-five per cent recovery of the EDTA eluent collected before rare-earth breakthrough and during elution of lutetium, ytterbium, and thulium, and essentially complete recovery of the HEDTA or DTPA retaining agents, are possible without extensive processing.

摘要:
A method is described for the use of molten salts as an eluent for thin-layer chromatography of inorganic ions. The separation of some post-transition metal ions can be successfully accomplished through the use of alkali metal nitrate eutectic melts. The mechanism of separation appears to be one of cation exchange with the silica gel used as the adsorbent. By appropriate use of the various alkali metal cations of the nitrate eutectics and the using of complexing anions, such as chloride, cyanide, and thio-cyanate, most mixtures of these metal ions could be resolved. A possible application of the technique could be in the separation and identification of chemical species that are unstable at room temperature but are stable in molten salts or at higher temperatures.

Kováts retention indices can be used to characterize the gas chromatographic behavior of C1and C2halocarbons on Porapak Q. Within each series of halocarbons the retention index increases with chlorine content, decreases with fluorine and hydrogen content, and is directly proportional to molecular weight and boiling point. Substitution of a fluorine or a bromine atom for a chlorine atom in these compounds results in characteristic changes in the retention index. The heats of adsorption are in the neighborhood of the latent heats of vaporization for the compounds examined.

Baker and Williams's chromatographic fractionation technique, employing simultaneous temperature and solvent gradients along a column, has been successful in separating three diastereoisomer salt derivatives derived from optical isomers. Thed-andl-α-phenylethylamine diastereoisomers ofd-mandelic acid and thed-andl-tartrates ofl-brucine were separated by approximately 60%. A partial separation was achieved on thed-andl-histidine salts ofd-tartaric acid. An aqueous—alcohol—acetonitrile solvent system was used for the separations. Irregular diastereoisomer formation and dissociation of diastereoisomers were problems discussed in the development of the analytical method.
