摘要:
After showing in a rigorous manner that when the chromatographic model is adopted to describe displacement development phenomena, HETP is twice as big as HETP in the countercurrent resin-solution model analogous to the distillation model, different equations are given for the steady-state profile according to the origin of the plates: origin where the molar fraction is 0.5, origin at the point of initial molar fraction, and origin at the middle of the band. The distance from the middle of the band to the initial molar fraction zone is given as well as molar fractions at the ends of the band.

Some processes which are of interest in chromatography are discussed. One process is concerned with the progress of a sample layer of small particles in a fluid which passes very slowly through a vertical tube (column) filled with pebble-shaped beads. The mean and variance of the time for the particles to cover a certain distance are of particular interest as they may be used as a basis for chemical analysis of the sample.

An improved design of a liquid membrane diffusion column was developed which enabled the measurement of a concentration difference of surfactant between liquid membranes and the solutions used to form them. The previously proposed model for liquid membrane diffusion which assumed that the films were of the order of a few molecules thick was not consistent with the data observed using a specially designed diffusion column. A bimodal droplet distribution was measured for a typical emulsion, and the influence of the liquid constituent of the membrane on the permeation rate was investigated. No statistically significant difference in permeation rates was noted when different liquids were used to form the membranes.

摘要:
A stochastic model for a frothless solvent ion flotation from aqueous solutions is presented. The model takes into consideration both adsorption and desorption of ions onto bubbles passing through the aqueous solutions to the organic phase. Theoretical predictions of the stochastic model compare very well with the experimental results of “flotoextraction” of thulium and americium from citrate aqueous solutions.

The thermodynamic equilibrium constants for the reactions between the cationic surfactant, ethylhexadecyldimethylammonium bromide, EHDA-Br, and various anions were determined using spectrophotometric and specific ion electrode measurements. The sequence of stability of EHDA+in the presence of the anions X−studied is Br−> F−> H2PO4−> NO3−> C6H5O−> I−. The sequence of stability of EHDA-X is the reverse of this. The EHDA+stability sequence is the same as the order of selectivity expected during foam fractionation from published results for Br−, I−, NO3−, and for H2PO4−and C6H5O−, i.e., I−preferred over NO3−, which is preferred over Br−, etc. The stability and selectivity sequences are interrelated by the steric hindrance of EHDA+in the presence of the anions X−at the bubble surface.

Analysis of dysprosium distribution data determined at varying nitrate concentration but constant ionic strength indicates that the dysprosium exists in the aqueous phase as Dy (NO3)+12. The corresponding complex which is extracted into the organic phase is taken to be Dy(NO3)(TTA)2(TBP)2.
