摘要:
Zirconium phosphate is perhaps the first insoluble salt of a polybasic metal to be used as an ion exchanger. It is the most studied and probably the most useful of all the materials of this type. These materials are prepared by combining oxides of group IV with the more acidic oxides of groups V and VI of the periodic table, as shown in Table 1.

摘要:
On the basis of both the literature data and the results of our own studies, some chemical and physicochemical aspects of selective flotation of inorganic ions was discussed. Classification of properties and events that determine the flotated ion separation, such as ionic charge, base-acid equilibria, complexation processes, solubility of ion-collector compounds, and ion affinity to surfactants have been described and exemplified.

摘要:
The field of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) has undergone explosive development. Today it stands as one of the most popular methods for fractionation of proteins (and other charged macromolecules) and for testing homogeneity. The use of PAGE as a quantitative physical-chemical tool, for example, in the estimation of molecular weight, rather than as a qualitiative method, is already well established. Other applications, such as for measurement of free mobility, molecular net charge, isoelectric point, and apparent diffusion coefficient, are just beginning to be exploited. A recent article (1) and two monographs (2,3) review the progress in this field. However, before we can make further progress in this direction and evaluate the precision and accuracy of the results obtained, it is necessary to examine several basic assumptions, and ask

A method has been developed for estimation of the extent of polymerization of acrylamide by measurement of the amide-nitrogen of residual extractable acrylamide monomer. This method has been applied to the evaluation of polymerization efficiency, its reproducibility, and its dependence on the concentrations of three catalysts (persulfate, riboflavin, and TEMED) at pH 3.9 and 0°C. The effects of TEMED on gel pH, on the relative mobility of dyes and proteins, and on the “stacking limits” of multiphasic buffer systems have also been studied. These studies permit development of guidelines by which polymerization conditions can be optimized.

The properties of polyacrylamide gels with 1 to 50% cross-linking (%C) were studied using electrophoresis in multiphasic buffer systems of five proteins with known molecular weight. The extrapolated free mobility (Y0orM0varies in a biphasic manner with %C, reaching a maximum when %C is 5 to 7%, and falling to a constant plateau value specific for each protein when %C is greater than 20%.

The properties of a buffer system predicted by T. M. Jovin's theory of multiphasic (discontinuous) buffer systems have been tested experimentally both in free solution and in polyacrylamide gels. The most widely applied multiphasic buffer system, viz., the Tris-glycine system of Ornstein and Davis was used for this purpose. The properties of this system were computed on the basis of the Jovin theory. The pH, specific conductance, and boundary displacement were measured in the buffers corresponding to the original and the operative buffers of both the stacking (upper) gel and the separation (lower) gel in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Values of pH and specific conductance in the absence of gels were found to be in reasonable agreement with theory. In polyacrylamide gels, after removal of residual reactants of the polymerization reaction by equilibration with the appropriate buffer, there was good agreement between observed and predicted values of pH and boundary displacement. However, the observed values for specific conductance were lower than predicted. The effects of pre-electrophoresis and of gel concentration on pH, conductance, and boundary displacement were also studied.
