Summary.Picture effects on consistency of recall (i.e., items remembered both immediately and after a delay) and recall of unique items (i.e., those remembered only after a delay) were examined by having 100 fourth‐ and sixth‐graders read a 360‐word story and write all they could remember of it immediately and also after five days. Half of the children received pictures with the story. Pupils receiving pictures with text recalled details more consistently than pupils reading text without pictures, and sixth‐graders recalled main ideas and also details more consistently than fourth‐graders. Recall of fourth‐graders was characterised by higher proportions of unique main ideas and details. Summary.199 schoolchildren in five groups at 1‐year intervals between the ages of 7 and 12 completed a verbal and a figural divergent test along with the Draw‐a‐Man test in a preliminary normative investigation of age trends in ideational fluency. The broadly consistent increases with age found on the verbal divergent and Draw‐a‐Man tests were not present on the figural divergent test, and there were no consistent effects of sex on these results. Further normative data are needed to clarify the relationship between age and ideational fluency before studies can be meaningfully

Summary.Students undertaking a particular form of postgraduate (PhD) research which involves collaboration between a university and an external organisation were given a small battery of psychological tests. Test scores were related to ratings of students provided by academic tutors. Students with better ratings displayed low to moderate complexity and low neuroticism. Rudimentary explanations of the results are suggested.

Summary.This paper presents a table of item discriminatory values in terms of differences in appropriate responses from equal numbers of subjects in the upper and lower tails of a distribution. The table is based on the difference between the mean scores of equal proportions taken from the opposite tails in a normal distribution. It provides separate significance values for reference with 50, 33.3 and 25 per cent of the sample taken from each tail of the distribution. It provides a means of initially classifying items as poor, fair or good, and then gives a simple method for rank‐ordering accepted items.
