摘要:
AbstractThe attempted synthesis of diacrylylmethane by the acylation of methyl vinyl ketone with ethyl acrylate produced exclusively the homopolymer of diacrylylmethane. This new polymer is linear and is composed of recurring methylene dihydroresorcinol units. An anionic mechanism is proposed for the cyclopolymerization of diacrylylmethane. Polydiacrylylmethane undergoes chemical reactions which are characteristic of beta diketones and proof for structure of the polymer is based on solubility, fusibility, infrared absorption, ultraviolet absorption, and enol titration data.

AbstractA linear high polymer composed of repeating α‐methylene glutaric anhydride units has resulted from the controlled cyclopolymerization of acrylic anhydride. AbstractPolybenzylidene was prepared by the decomposition of phenyldiazomethane in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate as catalyst. The polymerization was carried out in toluene at −80°C., and polymer having a degree of polymerization of 30–35 was obtained in 80–85% yield. Examination of the infrared spectrum confirmed the “pendent” polybenzylidene structure, which is to be expected by analogy with the formation of other polyalkylidenes from the corresponding diazoalkanes. The infrared spectrum and melting point of polybenzylidene were found to be very different from those of polybenzyl‐type polymers in accordance with the dissimilarity in their structures. AbstractHydronopyl acrylate has been synthesized by direct esterification of the alcohol with acrylic acid. Its homopolymer and a variety of copolymers, terpolymers, and a tetrapolymer have been prepared and their properties determined. The terpolymer containing equal weights of the acrylate, butadiene, and acrylonitrile is a good oil‐resistant rubber with a gum tensile strength double that of a 31% acrylonitrile‐69% butadiene copolymer. These properties were obtained at the expense of good low temperature properties. AbstractA study has been made of the disposition of carbon‐black particles in the tear and fracture surfaces of various filled rubbers by replica electron microscopy. The surfaces are characterized by two parameters, viz., the proportion of the surface area occupied by filler, and the proportion occupied by particles extracted from the rubber by the gelatine first‐stage replica. Values obtained for the former quantity indicate that the rupture path departs strongly from a random plane through the material. The second quantity is a measure of filler‐to‐rubber adhesion, which is found to depend upon the nature of the filler‐rubber interface and is related to the energy required to produce rupture. AbstractDetails are given of a further modification to the Ray ebulliometer which permits easy interchange of the Cottrell pump tube. The stability of the apparatus with different pump tubes and pumping conditions was also examined. Molecular weights obtained with the use of two ebulliometers and three solvent systems are compared. The validity of the recently developed ultracentrifuge methods for determining physical properties of molecules with molecular weights in the range 300 to 10,000 was checked by using a pure compound of known molecular weight. Agreement was obtained also between the data obtained by the Klainer and Kegeles method and separate sedimentation and diffusion data. The molecular weight of an ethyl acetate extract of black wattle tannin was determined by the ebulliometric and these ultracentrifuge methods. The ultracentrifuge value for the whole extract decreased with time due to sedimentation of high molecular weight impurities. The final ultracentrifuge weight‐average molecular weight (1175) is in good agreement with the number‐average value for the tannin polyphenols (922) obtained by ebulliometry. AbstractA versatile instrument, The Static Propensity Tester, was constructed for the measurement of the rate of electrostatic charge build up and decay on polymer films and fabrics. The tester was used for measuring the rates of both positive and negative potentials in the voltage range of 1000–10,000 volts. From such studies it was observed that above a certain minimum potential, it always took longer for charge to build up on a sample than to decay. Also, the rate of charge decay was found to be dependent on the exposed surface area of a sample as well as its electrical resistance. The loss of charge from a given substance was postulated to occur by two processes, a conduction process through the substrate and a radiation process through the atmosphere. In addition, polymers were found to exhibit a charge selectivity for the sign of the applied voltage, i.e., wool had a faster negative charge decay rate whereas cellulose had a faster positive decay rate. The root‐mean‐square half life of charge decay for positive and negative voltages was found to follow an exponential type law with respect to magnitude of charge and relative humidity.
