摘要:
SYNOPSISTHIS PAPER EXAMINES the use of water in the generation of electricity in England and Wales and describes the measures taken to reduce the environmental consequences of this use. Potential effects on water quality that may arise indirectly from activities other than water use are also discussed. The first part of the paper deals with a range of topics that are generally common to the generation of electricity by either of the principal means ‐ fossil fuel (coal and oil) combustion and nuclear energy. The second part of the paper deals specifically with the discharge of radioactive materials that may affect the aquatic environmen

摘要:
ABSTRACTBucket‐type samplerswere installed in the unsaturated zone to intercept septic tank effluent descending through the Chalf at Snowdown, Kent. Better than 90 per cent removal of BOD and COD, and of the order of 99 per cent removal of coiform bacteria, were observed after downward percolation through 2.1 m of Chalk. Nitrification of ammonia had begun at that depth, but not at intermediate depth. The results, though limited, suggest that septic tank effluent is purified in the Chalk in a similar way to settled sewag

摘要:
SYNOPSISTHE PROTOTYPE OF a tubular configured filter press has been installed at a local water treatment plant. The prototype unit dewaters the polyelectrolyte/Bentonite slurry resulting from the treatment of 30 Ml/d of surface water to a spadable cake. In this process a slurry is fed under pressure into a self‐supporting array of porous fabric tubes; the liquid in the slurry filters through the tube walls while the slurry solids are deposited as a thin layer on the internal walls of the tubes. After a relatively thin cake has been formed, it is dislodged from the tube walls by means of a roller cleaning device. The cake is transported out of the tubes and deposited on a perforated conveyor belt where it is drained and conveyed to a collection hopper. The plant is fully automated and has been operating successfully since January 198

摘要:
SYNOPSISAN OUTBREAK OF gastro‐enteritis in several villages to the North East of Leeds, England, in July 1980 was rapidly traced to the water supply. One of the source boreholes was found to be contaminated by sewage from faulty sewers, via the Magnesian limestone. The combination of circumstances which allowed the contaminated water to enter the supply are described, as are the ways in which systems were improved to prevent any similar incident occurri

摘要:
ABSTRACTThisProjectDescribesa rural water supply project in Senegal, West Africa, carried out in phases by Balfours, during the period 1983‐88.The first phase was a study, followed by detailed survey, construction works and borehole drilling. The scheme was financed by a $6 million grant from the Overseas Development Administration (ODA). British equipment such as the vehicles, pumps, elevated sectional steel water towers, pipes and fittings, were purchased and shipped to Senegal by the Crown Aents.Balfours designed, specified, and supervised the construction of water supply systems in 18 villages in Senegal comprising deep boreholes, pumping plant, elevated sectional steel water towers, and limited piped distribution systems. In order to ensure a full understanding of the project by the people it was to serve, and because major international contractors were unwilling to bid for a project which was scattered across a large area of Senegal, the work was carried out by direct labour, much of which was recruited in the villages in which the works were located. About 85000 people and 250000 cattle and sheep were provided with safe, reliable supplies of clean drinking water, as a result of the projec
