摘要:
&NA;Alzheimer's disease is a dementing illness characterized by progressive memory impairment and difficulty in at least two other cognitive domains. A major advance in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) occurred in the early 1990s with the FDA approval of tacrine, an acetylcholinesterase (AchE) inhibitor. Over the past 5 years, newer AchE inhibitors have been released for the symptomatic treatment of AD. In addition, growing numbers of people with AD are turning to non‐FDA‐approved alternative medicines such as vitamin E and Ginkgo biloba for treatment. Double‐blind, placebo‐controlled studies have established the efficacy of cholinesterase inhibitors in the treatment of AD. Vitamin E and selegiline were assessed in one large randomized trial and were shown to slow the progression of AD to major milestones. Evidence for the efficacy of other compounds is less robust. Strategies for the possible prevention and reversal of symptoms are on the horizon.

摘要:
&NA;Recently, models such as the Eden Alternative have presented a theoretical basis for attempting to create a therapeutic environment by bringing live‐in animals and plants into the nursing home. This article reports on the implementation and assessment of an intervention termed the “Living Habitat,” which borrows concepts from the Eden Alternative model. Implemented on a 32‐bed unit of a large urban nursing home, the Living Habitat offered numerous plants, a parakeet to any resident who requested one, and two cats and a dog for the unit. A baseline assessment of residents (N = 26) was conducted prior to the introduction of the animals and plants, and followup data were obtained 6 months after the intervention began. Results indicate that, following the introduction of the Living Habitat, residents higher in cognitive status became more positively engaged with their environment but reported a decreased sense of control. Residents who had greater affinity for pets also became more positively engaged with their environment. Qualitative impressions and challenges in implementing a systemic intervention are discussed.

摘要:
&NA;The Acupuncture Pilot Study for Persons with Dementia is the first study in the United States to examine acupuncture as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VD). Funded by the Helen Bader Foundation, the study was conducted from 1997 to 1999 at Wellesley College's Center for Research on Women. The study, which included 11 treatment participants and no controls, demonstrated that acupuncture may be a feasible and effective treatment for depression and anxiety in Americans with AD or VD. All enrolled participants completed at least 22 acupuncture needling treatments and every required evaluation. Using paired sample t‐tests, statistically significant improvements were found in three of the four scales used to assess the effect of acupuncture on mood.

摘要:
&NA;Support group meetings for persons with Alzheimer's disease help alleviate the stigma, fear, depression, and isolation that often accompany the disease. This article discusses how groups supported by three geographic locations serving the San Diego area have found this forum invaluable. They urge others to provide opportunities for persons with Alzheimer's disease to express their thoughts and feelings and make their voices heard.

摘要:
&NA;The Memory Enhancement Program has been developed to support people who do not need to live in a secured Alzheimer's unit but do need more support than is commonly found in traditional assisted living communities. This article describes the program and gives the results of two pilot programs that have had a positive effect on people with early Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment.

摘要:
&NA;Greating, adapting, and evaluating therapeutic programs for people with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (ADRD) or their caregivers can sometimes be a difficult and frustrating task. The needs and goals of these individuals are not always clear; funds to promote quality stimulation, awareness, or educational programs are often lacking, and tangible resource tools can be scarce. This article defines the Forget‐Me‐Not program and provides a step by step approach to assist program planners in building into their facilities the types of programs that suit their changing and developing needs.
