AbstractObjectiveTo describe and illustrate bleomycin‐induced cutaneous toxicity, which may present atypically in AIDS patients with Kaposi's sarcoma.Design and subjectsCase note review of all AIDS patients receiving systemic chemotherapy in the preceding year.SettingCombined oncology and HIV out‐patient clinic at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.Outcome measuredCutaneous toxicity associated with intravenous bleomycin therapy.ResultsWe report three cases of bleomycin‐induced flagellate dermatitis with atypical presentation of pruritic skin lesions after relatively low doses of bleomycin.ConclusionsBleomycin usage is increasing as an effective agent in the treatment of AIDS‐related Kaposi's sarcoma. Awareness that cytotoxic drugs may produce a range of unusual cutaneous adverse effects in this patient population is important for doctors of all specialities who treat HIV‐infected patients. AbstractBackgroundTrifluoperazine, a potent calmodulin inhibitor, is used as an antipsychotic drug. Similar agents have inhibited the growth of yeasts.MethodsSusceptibility of 101Candida aibicansstrains from patients were tested against trifluoperazine (Trif), ketoconazole (Ktz), and the combination of Ktz with Trif, using Sabouraud's broth.ResultsThe minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC)s for 101 Strains ofC. aibicanswere: Trif 65.8 ± 2.1 μg/ml, Ktz 27.9 ± 9.1 μg/ml. The combination of Ktz and Trif in various ratios (1:1. 1:2. 2: 1) was found to exert synergistic effect and the mean values of the combinations were: Ktz ± Trif 2.72 ± 0.17, 2.5 ± 0.18, 3.43 ± 0.21 μg/ml. These results were significantly different (P<0.001) when compared with ketoconazole alone.OutcomeOur findings indicate that trifluoperazine (calmodulin inhibitor) increased the antifungal activity of Ktz againstC. aibicam

AbstractBackgroundClassical sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis and gonorrhoea, have shown a marked reduction in incidence over the past decade in industrialised countries. A contrary trend was observed for syphilis in West Saxony.MethodsData compiled on the incidence of syphilis in West Saxony (1.4 Mill, population) from 1983 to 1992.ResultsThe total number of patients notified with syphilis was 1509. The incidence increased between 1984 and 1984 by a factor of 7.7. Seventy one percent were clinically active, whereas 29% were in the latent stages.ConclusionDespite a relatively high level of the health care and strict reporting system, syphilis incidence increased. Reasons are discussed.

AbstractObjectivesDescription of the epidemiology of mycobacterial infections in HIV/AIDS patients in Nancy. Comparison of the main features of tuberculous and non‐tuberculous mycobacterial infections.Patients58 HIV‐positive patients with mycobacterial infections attended the Department of Infectious Diseases, University Hospital of Nancy from January 1985 to December 1992.ResultsTuberculosis identified in 17 patients who were only moderately immunosuppressed, and had a high fatality rate (65%): no resistant strains isolated. Non‐tuberculous mycobacteria infections occurred in 41 patients who were deeply immunosuppressed and had a poor prognosis.Mycobacterium avium‐intracellularecomplex was the most frequently isolated species (31 cases) and showed a high level of antibiotic resistance.ConclusionsNTM infections are life‐threatening diseases in AIDS patients and should be systematically sought in HIV‐positive patients with low CD4 + lymph

AbstractObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 and 18, herpes simplex virus (HSV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in cervical biopsies in order to evaluate their relationship in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cancer.SettingColposcopy clinic; Service de Gynécologic‐Obstétrique I, Hôpital de Hautepierre. Institut de Virologie dc la Faculté de Medecine de Strasbourg, France.SubjectsForty‐two women with low grade and high grade CIN, twenty women with cervical squamous cancer and twenty‐two women with normal cervix assessed by cytological, colposcopical and histological analysis.MethodsViral DNA was detected by PCR technique in colposcopically directed biopsies.ResultsThe prevalence of HPV16 and/or HPV18 with HSV and/or HCMV was significantly higher in cancers (25%) or high grade CIN (29%) than in normal cervices (0%).
