AbstractA number of dermatological diseases are associated with distinct HLA types. These associations vary in different populations and ethnic groups. HLA determination can be related to different disease courses, various anatomical predilection sites and can be used as a diagnostic tool. However, the pathogenic role of HLA in susceptibility to specific dermatological diseases often remains unclear.

AbstractFour patients (three women and one man) suffering from multiple subcutaneous, painful, nodular tumors, diagnosed as multiple schwannomas of peripheral nerves (MCN), are presented. Two had radicular and VIII cranial nerve schwannomas associated with meningioma. The other two patients had only MCN. These cases were obtained from a prospective study of 30 patients with clinical criteria of neurofibromatosis (NF). The main inclusion criteria were pathological nuclear magnetic resonance (3). In 19 cases histological studies of internal neurological tumors were carried out. The four cases reported here presented fewer than six ‘café au lait’ spots. No hereditary background was demonstrated in these patients. Clinical and genetic investigations were insufficient to affirm that MCN or schwannomatosis is a new entity or a new form of NF. AbstractIn a study of clinical parameters in seborrhoeic dermatitis, a questionnaire was mailed to 524 patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis who had presented to the Department of Dermatology, Sahlgrenska Hospital, Göteborg, Sweden in 1988. Of the 82% patients who replied, 55% were males and 45% females. The mean age was 47.2 years. The patients were asked about age at onset of the disease, duration, distribution and severity of the disease, seasonal variation, influence of environment, physical and psychological status and concomitant diseases. It has to be taken into consideration that the data obtained in this study represent a hospital survey. Many patients experienced improvement of the disease in the summer and after sun exposure. No particular environmental factors were indicated by the patients as influencing the disease. There was a significantly higher incidence of seborrhoeic dermatitis in patients' parents than in spouses. The results of the questionnaire indicate that an hereditary factor is involved in the pathogenesis of seborrhoeic dermatitis

AbstractThe environment can cause and maintain a number of dermatoses, such as contact dermatitis and photodermatitis. We have recently noted a greater incidence of photodermatitis, even in subjects who declared that they had had no excessive photo exposure and/or who had tolerated normal exposure to sun in previous years. This indicated a possible change in solar irradiation. Consequently, we undertook a study of the climatic and meteorological conditions in northern Italy over the last 12 years (1978–1990). The following variables were considered: air temperature, relative humidity, solar UVA and UVB radiation, both scattered and direct. Annual data show that there has been an increase in scattered solar energy but no change in direct irradiation. There has been a clear reduction in humidity and slight increases in temperature. AbstractThis brief history of the development of the tissue expansion technique, from the initial intuitions of C.G. Neumann to the later applications by C. Radovan and subsequent uses, includes notes on the surgical techniques involved and the structural modifications of expanded skin. The author explains his preference for use of the external valve expander and presents data regarding use of high resolution ultrasound to monitor the thickness of expanded tissues. Dermatologists as well as surgeons should be familiar with the possible uses of this technique in the treatment of various wounds and skin lesions.

AbstractObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of HPV type 16 among Irish women with various degrees of CIN.SubjectsOne hundred and five women with varying degrees of CIN, detected on prior cytological screening, and thirty‐two women with cytologically normal cervical smears.MethodsHPV 16 DNA was detected by the PCR technique, with controls against contamination.SettingThe colposcopy clinic in the Rotunda Maternity Hospital, Dublin, and the Virus Reference Laboratory, U.C.D., from October 1991 to April 1992.ResultsHPV 16 DNA was detected in 66% of subjects with abnormal cervical cytology, and in 31% of those with normal cervical smears. A higher HPV 16 prevalence was found among those women with CIN III (74%), than among those with CIN I/CIN II (60%).ConclusionsThe prevalence of HPV 16 among Irish women with normal cytology and CIN was similar to previous published studies from other areas, with a higher prevalence in those with abnormal cervical cytology.
