摘要:
A knowledge of the interaction energy between two atoms as a function of their separation is important in many aspectsofradiation damage theory. Recent calculations of this energy from first principles are reviewed in this article, particular attention being paid to calculations based fin the Thomas-Fermi and Thomas-Fermi-Dirac statistical theories of the atom. The advantages and limitations of these theories are discussed from the radiation damage point of view. The energy ranges over which experimental results or theoretical calculations are more useful at present are also discussed.

摘要:
It is shown that a recently-introduced, computational technique makes possible, for the first time, the theoretical treatment of the simultaneous production of reacting species and their diffusion-limited reactions. The approach is illustrated with radiation-damage examples, but the technique should be applicable, as well. to problems in photo- and radiation-chemistry, in luminescence, and in precipitation-type reactions.

摘要:
Local regions on the surface of a sample of ZnO: Zn phosphor powder were deteriorated by low energy heavy ions to a depth of a few hundred Angstrom units. These regions behave as ‘thin films’ in which a negligible small amount of light is produced when an energetic projectile passes through it. The sample was then scanned across energetic ion beams. The scintillation response diminished when the beam impinged onto a film. The decrease, ΔL, in light intensity is the amount of light produced in a phosphor region whose thickness is equivalent to the film thickness. For1H and4He the luminescent efficiency, ΔL/ΔE(the ratio of the light produced to the observed energy loss), is approximately independent of energy indicating that the scintillation response depends primarily on the inelastic projectile-electron collisions rather than the elastic projectile target atom encounters.

摘要:
Observations of sintering of fine particles of diamond, SiO2and Al2O3and possibly Al in a neutron radiation field are reported. Possible mechanisms are discussed and it is concluded that the transport of interstitials to the surface is most probably the responsible mechanism. This may occur by diffusion, channeling or focusing, and it is suggested that measurement of radiation sintering at two temperatures will show if the effect is thermally activated diffusion and that examination of changes in stoichiometry of the sintered interface will show if focusing or channeling dominates as a transport mechanism. Computations are also presented which show that the solar wind on the lunar surface could sinter dust into the observed clumps in a reasonable length of time.

摘要:
It is shown that the ratio of the resistivity increments injected by irradiation at low temperature into deformed and into annealed specimens is related to the difference in fractional recovery that occurs in Stage I between the two specimens. Using this relation the ratio of resistivity increments to the resistivity increment due to dislocations is computed for a number of different irradiations. For a given metal and type of irradiation the enhancement of resistivity increment in a deformed specimen is closely proportional to its dislocation resistivity. It is shown that this is more in accord with explanations of the enhancement based on greater defect production per unit irradiation dose than with explanations based on greater specific resistivity of Frenkel pairs in the presence of large defect concentrations.

摘要:
Radiation-induced electrical conductivity inn-hexane has been measured as a function of the concentration of charge scavenger of low diffusion constant, such as 1,2-benzanthracene, 1,2-benzphenanthrene, pyrene and naphthacene. With increasing scavenger concentration, a gradual decrease of relative electrical conductivity, down to an individual value corresponding to each scavenger, has been observed. This is interpreted as implying that both negative and positive charge carriers, or free ions, are reactive entities throughout their life time. The charge scavenging efficiencies have been found to lie in the following order; 1,2-benzanthracene = 1,2-benzphenanthrene < pyrene < naphthacene.

摘要:
The present paper deals with the theoretical interpretation of the radiation damage and its recovery in f.c.c. metals. The relative merits of the one-interstitial and the conversion-two-interstitial model are discussed. It is concluded that only the conversion-two-interstitial model is able to account for all aspects of the experimental data presented in the literature.
