摘要:
The energy resolution of a3He ionization chamber, which varies from 13 keV FWHM at 0 keV to approximately 30 keV at 1 MeV, allows observation of false peaks due to the presence of scattering or absorbing materials and due to accidental near-coincidences of the rather long-risetime detector pulses. Pulse-risetime distributions depend on the neutron beam's angle of incidence to the detector axis: ability to separate3He-recoil pulses from full-energy3He(n.p) pulses diminishes for neutrons of energy greater than 1.5 MeV and incident normal to the detector axis. When high-energy neutrons are present, measurement at a grazing angle is recommended.

Recent interest in reactor safety and fusion related experiments has prompted measurements of the radiation field (neutron and gamma) in the irradiation cell at Texas A&M University's TRIGA reactor. Neutron activation techniques were used to measure fluxes at various positions in the irradiation cell.

摘要:
A beryllium based detector has been developed which can be used to measure the output of pulsed neutron sources in the D, D and D, T fusion energy regions. The principle of this detector, and its construction, are discussed. The use of the detector in measuring the output from Kaman pulsed neutron sources and from the SPR III reactor at the Sandia National Lab. is discussed. The method used to calibrate the detector is described and theoretical calculations are presented of the variation of its efficiency with energy. The calculations were made using the MCNP and Tiger codes. Some incidental nuclear data measured during the testing of this detector are presented.

摘要:
A new unfolding method which justly incorporates the Poisson statistics of neutron detection has been developed. The derived likelihood equations are nonlinear, but have been solved with an aid of the singular value decomposition of the response matrix. The characters of the solution are examined. A guiding principle in constructing response matrix is proposed.

摘要:
Various fission reactor neutron spectra were used to test the suitability of cerium-activated lithium silicate glass scintillators for tritium production measurements in fusion reactor blanket experiments. After the irradiation, the scintillations produced by the decaying tritium and other sources were recorded. Although additional work is needed to develop background corrections, glass scintillators appear to be a method of tritium measurement that can be employed in conjunction with other neutron activation techniques, such as liquid scintillator methods.

The energy distribution of a “monoenergetic” and a “white” neutron source were determined with an NE 213 detector system by neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy and by the unfolding of the simultaneously measured scintillation pulse height spectra. Both the neutron detection efficiency necessary for the normalization of the TOF spectra and the set of reference spectra used in the matrix inversion procedure were calculated by Monte Carlo simulations based on identical data sets. The fluence distributions resulting from these different methods agreed reasonably well over the entire energy range. In particular, the integrated fluence of well isolated peaks agreed within the 2 % uncertainty estimated for this ratio.
