摘要:
This paper is an attempt to systematize the experimental results obtained in studying medium- energy ion scattering by solid surfaces. We confine ourselves to the analysis of only one definite interval of primary ion energies-from several keV to several hundreds of keV. This is due to several reasons. First, only this energy interval has been investigated in most detail. Second, only in this interval are the experimental data obtained by various authors in a good agreement. Therefore one can draw well-founded conclusions concerning the mechanism of medium-energy ion scattering by solids. Finally, the scientific interest of the authors is of certain importance when choosing the given energy interval.

摘要:
Optical reflectivity spectra (3.45 to 5.90 eV) of CdS implanted with 40 keV I+are presented for doses between 5 × 1013and 1 × 1016ions/cm2and for isochronal anneals up to 550°C. Typical peaks (E1:A, B) present in crystalline CdS decrease with increasing dose until they are no longer resolvable; however, a prominent saturation observed in Si and somewhat in GaAs is not found for doses up to 1 × 1016ions/cm2. Correlation with similar results obtained from the Rutherford scattering technique suggests the reflection variations are damage related and verifies previous results that anobservable amorphous layer is not formed. Annealing tends to increase the peaks with complete restoration occurring for doses 7 × 1014ions/cm2annealed at 500°C.

The electrical resistivity increases in platinum samples electron irradiated at 140 K after slow quenches have been measured as functions of the incident particle flux. The significance of plateaus found in the production curves is discussed with regard to the One and the Two Interstitial Models in f.c.c. metals.

摘要:
A high resolution electron microscopy investigation has been undertaken in order to obtain additional information regarding the nature of the strain field of small defects (∼10–75 Å diameter) produced in copper and copper-16 atomic per cent aluminum crystals by neutron irradiation and by bombardment with 40 keV Cu+ions. In addition to bright and dark field observations at electron optical magnifications of 250,000–425,000 ×, lattice fringe images were obtained in the vicinity of the radiation produced defects by combining the transmitted beam with one of the diffracted beams. It was found that some of the defects had a principal strain component along only one ⟨111⟩ whereas other defects had a more complex strain field with strain components along more than one direction. For those defects with a principal strain component along only one ⟨111⟩, the localized defect concentration in a collision cascade may be sufficiently high for the spontaneous formation of a Frank dislocation loop to occur. In those cases where the strain field of the defect is more complex there may only be subregions within a single collision cascade where the localized defect concentration is high enough to produce sufficient strain contrast to be visible. Spontaneous loop formation may occur in some of these subregions but not in others.

摘要:
Some factors (long etching and annealing effects) are experimentally and theoretically studied, neglect of which has resulted in low ages in the fission track datings of geological samples. The empirical correction methods, proposed by Storzer and Wagner concerning these factors, are reinvestigated. It is shown that these corrections can also be calculated theoretically. The problem is considered in fuller details for glass samples. A new method is proposed for the correction of the thermally reduced fission-track ages of glasses.

The influence of ozone-containing atmosphere on the track-etching parameters of cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, polycarbonate and polyvinyl chloride sheets was studied. Evidence of the increase of registration sensitivity was found for all plastics investigated. The effects of ozone treatment on the tracks of both lightly and heavily ionizing nuclear particles are discussed. Experimental data are given on the variations of the etching properties of bulk material and latent tracks as a function of storage times in ozone atmosphere. The observations indicate that in any effect where there is a possibility of ozone production (e.g. with plastic detectors placed in spark discharge or exposed to ultraviolet radiation) the sensitivity variation due to ozone effect cannot be neglected.

Thermal effects can alter the physical and chemical parameters of the latent tracks and bulk material of dielectric track recorders, consequently those of the etched track pits too. A few characteristics of this thermal track-fading effect have been studied in various plastic track detectors irradiated with lightly and heavily ionizing nuclear particles. Experimental data are given for the influence of different annealing conditions on the diameter of etch pits and the bulk etch rate of plastics. The possibilities of the eradication of alpha-particle background and the selective thermal track discrimination in cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate and polycarbonate detectors have been studied. Few practical applications of the thermal track fading are also presented.

摘要:
The stopping cross section of He ions in gold has been measured at incident energies from 0.4 MeV–1.9 MeV. A backscattering technique was used to measure the energy loss in gold films which had been vacuum evaporated on sapphire substrates. The stopping cross section results are compared with the previous data of Wilcox, Gobeli and Nakata. Brice's semi-empirical formula has been fit to the data with a resultant root-mean-square percentage deviation of 0.6 per cent.
