摘要:
Revised and emended generic diagnoses for all stages and both sexes ofParacricotopusThienemann and Harnisch are given. The genus appears most closely related toRheocricotopusThienemann and Harnisch with some similarities of larvae and females toNanocladiusKieff. andMesocricotopusBrund. All stages and both sexes are described or redescribed of the PalaearcticParacricotopus niger(Kieffer) and ofParacricotopus glabern. sp. from South Carolina.

摘要:
Field research with emergence traps suggests that the larvae ofPhilopotamus ludificatusandWormaldia copiosamigrate upstream in winter and downstream in summer. These migrations, which appear to be determined by daylenght are directed to reaches with relatively higher water temperatures. The term “cold‐stenothermous”; for mountain stream‐inhabiting caddisflies is discussed from this aspect.

摘要:
Studies were conducted to determine the effects of 3 levels of sedimentation on the behavior and distribution of selected mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies in artificial laboratory streams. Most species responded negatively to increased levels of sedimentation; all preferred unsedimented over heavily sedimented substrate. Sensitivity to sedimentation differed among species with size, morphology, and behavior accounting for much of the variation. As sediment levels increased, more of the test substrate became uninhabited. Density per cobble increased only slightly with greater quantities of fine sediment. Nonburrowing species were unsuccessful in gaining access beneath cobbles when the undersurfaces and sides were sealed in fine sediments.

摘要:
After a long course over a stony substratum, the River Lune, England, runs over flat rock covered with moss. Larvae of four species of Ephemeroptera are abundant in this moss‐covered area from spring to autumn. They overwinter in the egg stage.Baetis rhodaniabundant in much of the river at all times of year, is numerous in this stretch in winter but absent from most summer collections. This absence is tentatively attributed to exclusion by the summer species.

摘要:
The life history and ecology ofStenonema modestumwas investigated in the North Anna River, a 5th order stream in the Piedmont Physiographic Province of Virginia.S. modestumsubimagines emerged in late‐afternoon to early‐evening from April to October. The duration of the subimago stage was ca. 24 hrs. There was seasonal size variation among adults with larger individuals emerging in the spring. There was also seasonal fluctuation in fecundity positively correlated with the seasonal variation in adult size. Nuptial flights occurred just before dusk with males forming swarms of 30–50 individuals above large riffles. Copulation occurred in the air. 5.modestumexhibited a multivoltine life cycle. Most of the overwintering brood emerged in April and deposited eggs; larvae from these eggs grew through the summer and emerged in mid‐August. Sporadic emergence of stragglers from the overwintering brood occurred throughout June and July; larvae from these eggs emerged in September and October. It appears that differential egg hatching was responsible for the continuous emergence pattern. There were at least 14 to 15 instars for the overwintering brood. Larvae were found most frequently under loose cobble and boulders. Larvae ofS.modestumwere opportunistic generalists in their feeding habits, primarily ingesting detritus and diatoms and occasionally early instars of Chironomidae.
