摘要:
Three species of water beetles, 2 dytiscids and 1 hydrophilid, from Mt. Roraima and Ptari‐tepui in the state of Bolivar, Venezuela, are discussed. One dytiscid,Tepuídessus brewerin. gen., n. sp., and the hydrophilidTropisternus jolyin. sp., are described and distinguishing characters are illustrated. The new taxa are compared to related ones and their habitats are discussed. Also, a collection ofRhantus elegansWaterhouse is reported for the first time since the species was described in 1895. The male genitalia ofR. elegansis illustrated for the first time and its habitat also is described.

摘要:
Our observations demonstrate that in laboratory aquariaHexagenia bilineata(Say) nymphs will leave clay, gravel, and sandy clay and migrate to adhesive mud or fine sandy mud with no response to coarse sandy mud indicated. The nymphs were able to burrow into all substrates offered, but the time required for penetration varied significantly. Burrowing times ranged from 30 s in adhesive mud to 168 s in clay. Ease of penetration (as measured by burrowing time) correlated well with observed substrate preferences. None of the physical or chemical parameters of the substrates which we measured correlated significantly with either selection or burrowing time. Ease of penetration seemed to be dependent upon a combination of factors including particle size and compactness and cohesiveness of the substrates. The characteristics of the two selected substrates include high moisture content (40% for each), low bulk density (0.91 and 0.94 g/ cm3), high organic content (7.1 and 7.9%), and predominantly silt composition (29% clay, 60% silt, and 11 % sand for adhesive mud and 26% clay, 51 % silt, and 23% sand for fine sandy mud). Our data suggest that substrate selection may play an important role in observed distribution patterns.

摘要:
A mountain stream, which had a constant temperature, was illuminated artificially so that its animals were exposed to a constant daylength of 18 hours over three years. The phenology of caddisflies was studied from emergence trap catches. All species were found to react by disoriented emergence, but none of them became fully acyclic.

摘要:
Data on the distribution of rheophilous aquatic insects from southeastern Australia (including Tasmania) and New Zealand indicate two unusual features in the Tasmanian fauna: there is a higher level of endemism in Tasmania than would be expected—both from its present geographical location with respect to the Australian mainland, and current knowledge of its geological history ‐and a number of rheophilous insects groups which could reasonably have been expected to occur in Tasmania are absent. Possible reasons for these apparent Zoogeographic anomalies are discussed, but none seem entirely satisfactory.

摘要:
The first collections of Psychodidae available from the area of the Caucasus and from Iran have been studied. Seven species are new to science:Bazarella centuretinaculasp. n.,Berdeniella caucasicasp. n.,Clytocerus grusinicussp. n.,Saraiella resslisp. n.,Satchelliella joostisp. n.,Mormia georgicasp. n., andPhilosepedon orientalissp. n. Most new species are close relatives of European Psychodidae, exceptClytocerus grusinicusthe affinities of which remain doubtful. Six additional wide‐spread species have also been found:Pericoma blandulaEaton,P. exquisitaEaton,Satchelliella nubila(Meigen),Peripsychoda auriculata(Curtis),Psychoda trinodulosaTonnoir, andMormia malickyiVaillant.

摘要:
The genusPolypedilumKieffer (Chironomidae) was first described in 1912 and not 1913 as was previously supposed. The type designation ofPolypedilum emarginatumKieffer, 1913 (=nubeculosumMeigen, 1818) is invalid as it was not one of the species included in the first citation ofPolypedilum.A new type‐species for the genusPolypedilumis designated from the two original species. The taxonomic concept of the genusPolypedilumis not altered by the change in type‐species.
