AbstractA study is made with the rare Oriental Buprestidae genusNippoduprestisObenberger, 1942. Four new species are described under the names:Nipponobuprcstis rubrocinctussp. nov.,N. guangxiensissp. nov.,N. orientalissp. nov. andN. bilyisp. nov. The two historic speciesN. amabilis(Shell van Voll.), 1864, andN. querceti(Saunders), 1973, are redescribed in the same time. This genus is divided into two subgenera as:Nipponobuprestiss. str. andNippaobuprestisiasubgen. nov.

AbstractThis paper deals with the morphology of the larvae ofCerutophyllus farreni chaoiSmit and Allen, 1955 and a comparison is made with the larvae of C.gallinue tribulisJordan, 1926.The diagnostic characters of the larvae of the two subspecies are the shape of egg burster, number of mandibular teeth, the relative positions of the sense organs and setae on the tergites of the thorax and abdomen and number of the setae of anal comb and the strut setae.

AbstractElectrophysiological recording showed two types of pheromone receptor cell in one sensillum trichodeum of the maleParanthrene tabani formis. Type A receptor cell fired larger nerve impulse to the major pheromone component E3, Z13,‐18:OH; type B receptor cell fired smaller nerve impulse to the candidate compound of minor pheromone component Z3, Z13‐18:Ac. AbstractElectroantennograms (EAGs1 were recorded from male adults ofMelanoplus sanguinipesto foliage odours from 5 plant species and 9 volatile compounds as well as their blends. Higher EAG responses were recorded for Louisianna sage and Alfalfa foliages, compared to other three gramineous plants. Among green odour chelricals, 6‐carbon alcohols (e. g. E‐2‐hexen‐1–01 and E‐3‐hexen‐1–01] resulted in the highest EAG responszs. No significant differences among the pentenol, 3‐pentanone and blank control were observed. In ternary and quaternary mixture tests of volatile compounds, the combinations with pentenol did not elicit greater amplitudes; thus pentenol and 3‐pentanone were proved to be unimportant to the response of this generalist grasshopper. AbstractThe chemical compounds that exist in plant leaf tissue are of great importance for homopteran insects during the proccess of host‐plant acceptance. From the leaf surface to the phloem tube, various groups of chemicals can be detected by insect's receptors which lead to different feeding responses. The effects of sugars and alkaloids in leaf surface; polysaccharides, pH gradients and phenolics in mesophyll; amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and secondary substances in phloem tube on phloem finding and host‐plant acceptance are reviewed respectively in this paper, which also includes the potential effects of mesophyll structures on insect's feeding preference. AbstractA comprehensive computer model, based on the concept and analysis of the population life system, was developed to simulate effects of major environmental variables on the population dynamics of brown planthopper (BPH),Nilaparvata lugensStill. The basic frame of the model consists of a multiple column matrix, which was used to describe the stage overlapping phenomenon and the age‐stage‐structure of the BPH population, and a set of difference equations, which was employed to calculate the growth of individuals from one age‐class and stage to the next in the BPH population. The life cycle of BPH was incremented in the model into 10 degree‐days age classes and simulations were run with daily time steps. The model incorporates 1) temperature‐dependent developmental rates or eggs, nymphs, and adults; 2) stage‐specific survival rates obtained from the life table data of BPH; 3) immigration patterns and rates of macropterous adults; and 4) female fecundity. General validation of the model was established by comparisons between simulated and observed population densities for five years at three locations, which represent plain, hilly, and mountainous aresa in Fujian Province, using actual daily weather data and immigration patterns of macropterous adults for each year as model inputs. Simulation results from the model output were also compared by varying the model inputs within realistic limits in order to analyze the model behavior. We think that this model may serve as the framework for further studies on biology and ecology of BPH, and used to study various integrated BPH management strategies.
