摘要:
We have observed five laser transitions in the 358–747‐nm region, all of which originate from excited energy levels of singly ionized aluminum. Laser action was obtained by exciting a neon buffer gas in an aluminum hollow cathode and the excitation mechanism is thought to be a Ne+‐Al charge transfer reaction. Single‐line output power on the 358‐nm laser transition of Al II was 9 mW, while multiline infrared output was 5 mW.

摘要:
An electro‐optic modulator, driven at a single radio frequency &ngr;, is used to create sidebands (&ngr;L±&ngr;) on the frequency &ngr;Lof a cw single‐mode CO2laser. Laser‐induced line narrowing in molecular Stark spectroscopy is demonstrated, using double resonances of the copropagating waves at &ngr;Land (&ngr;L±&ngr;) with pairs of coupled Doppler‐broadened transitions. Doppler‐free Stark spectra of the molecules PH3,13CH3F, and12CH3F are used to illustrate the technique. For PH3it is found that the electric dipole moment vibrational difference ‖&mgr; (v2=1)−&mgr; (v=0) ‖⩽0.005 D.

摘要:
Radiative and nonradiative transition probabilities from the4F3/2state of Nd3+in ED‐2 laser glass were measured for ions in different sites using laser‐induced fluorescence line‐narrowing techniques. Both radiative and multiphonon transition probabilities were found to be site dependent, with the relative radiative quantum efficiency varying by as much as 50%.

A new method of measuring inertial rotation is presented. It is based on the use of a passive ring resonator as the rotation sensing element and an external laser for measuring the difference between the clockwise and counterclockwise lengths of the resonator. Seventh harmonic generation in helium is used to produce coherent light at 38 mm from laser pulses at 266.1 nm. The variation of both the fifth and seventh harmonic signals with helium pressure is described.

Sustained operation of a Blumlein‐driven XeF excimer laser at pulse repetition rates as high as 200 pps has been achieved. A simple technique for reclamation and recycling of xenon used in the laser gas mixture is also reported.

摘要:
We have observed a complete cancellation of self‐phase modulation in 1.06‐&mgr; pulses propagating through cesium vapor. The negative nonlinear refractive index responsible for this is measured asn2/N=−(2.5±0.5) ×10−30esu, in good agreement with the theoretical value −2.62×10−30esu.
