摘要:
A negative‐branch confocal unstable resonator has been found to significantly improve the beam quality of a coaxial flashlamp‐pumped rhodamine 6G dye laser. In a performance comparison with a conventional parallel‐plane mirror resonator, over an order‐of‐magnitude increase in laser beam radiance has been measured. The negative‐branch unstable resonator demonstrated relatively uncritical alignment sensitivity.

摘要:
Channeling effect measurements were used to evaluate the residual damage in Si after 1000 °C anneal for high‐dose (5×1015−2×1016cm−2) As implantations through oxide layers. For these implantations the amount of damage after anneal increases with As dose and oxide thickness. This residual damage effect was simulated by oxygen implants into Si. We conclude that oxygen recoils are responsible for the disorder found in through‐oxide implants and for defects found at the periphery of oxide cuts used as implantations masks.

摘要:
Mode‐locked operation of a uv‐preionized TE CO2laser has been investigated at pressures in the 10–15‐atm range. By upconverting the output to 0.96 &mgr;m and recording it with a streak camera it has been shown that pulses of duration less than 150 psec can be generated usingp‐type Ge saturable absorbers.

摘要:
The results of an investigation of the time evolution of a mode‐locked pulse produced by a CO2laser passively mode locked with an In‐doped Ge bleachable absorber are presented. The observed pulse shortening is explained by a simple theory of pulse compression due to the saturable absorber. Pulse durations as short as 400 ps are observed.

摘要:
A sealed‐off cw waveguide CO2laser has been continuously tuned over 1.2 GHz on a single transition at 10.6 &mgr;m. The laser consists of a 9.5 cm×1.0 mm square discharge tube fabricated from polished BeO slabs. Line selection is achieved with a diffraction grating and tuning is accomplished by piezoelectric control of the resonator length.

摘要:
The ratio of the clockwise to counterclockwise intensities in a multimode HeNe ring laser was measured as the strength of unidirectional coupling between the two intensities was varied. These results are compared to calculations based on a gain saturation with field coupling model which indicates that intensity ratios >102are possible. With the addition of an etalon in the laser cavity, stable single‐mode operation is observed.

摘要:
Thermal diffusion and electrodiffusion of Cu into LiTaO3have been investigated. By an appropriate choice of diffusion conditions, a single‐mode waveguiding layer has been fabricated using the electrodiffusion method. The refractive‐index change at the surface is 5×10−3for bothneandnoand the diffusion depth is about 4 &mgr;m. The layer supports only the fundamental modes TE0and TM0, and exhibits good waveguiding properties.

摘要:
Experimental and theoretical analysis show that a spatially varying potential applied to one surface of a thick block of piezoelectric material will induce a piezoelectric deformation of that surface proportional to the potential at each point of the surface. There is essentially no dispersion in the piezoelectric response as a function of the spatial frequency of the applied potential even at high resolutions. This principle has been used to construct an electrically addressed monolithic piezoelectric mirror (MPM) which has high accuracy, stability, and speed of response. The MPM has been used successfully in a demonstration of real‐time correction of image phase distortions caused by a turbulent atmosphere.

摘要:
Room‐temperature interband Faraday rotation has been measured in samples of intrinsic germanium, doped cadmium telluride, and gallium arsenide at 10.59‐&mgr; wavelength, in magnetic fields up to 80 kG. Measurements with a 7‐mm‐diam incident beam indicate that at least 33 dB isolation and a figure of merit exceeding 100 deg/dB should be attainable in a practical device based on either of the first two materials.

摘要:
Josephson oscillations near 9 GHz, produced by a point‐contact junction mounted in a coaxial resonator and biased onto the cavity‐induced step in itsV‐Icurve, have been pulled in frequency and phase locked by a weak injected signal at a nearby frequency. The resulting output was at the signal frequency and had the narrow bandwidth and frequency stability of the input but the power level of the Josephson oscillations. Maximum gain of 51 dB was achieved for an input of 10−16W.
