摘要:
We report measurements of the spectral linewidth of InGaAsP lasers emitting at 1.3 &mgr;m as a function of the optical mode power. The spectral linewidth is of the order of 0.1–2.0 GHz for both gain‐ and index‐guided lasers. The linewidth can be described by a modified Schawlow–Townes formula taking into account a power‐independent contribution to the linewidth. This power‐independent contribution is attributed to mode intensity fluctuations due to mode coupling.

摘要:
Optimization of a Ne/Ar/Kr/F2gas mixture with respect to maximum KrF laser output has been performed. As an excitation source a transverse electron beam with a pulse length of 10 ns was used. The laser output obtained with a typical Ne/Ar/Kr/F2mixture containing mainly Ne was found to increase linearly with Ne partial pressure. At a pressure of 14 bar the laser output energy exceeds the one achieved with an optimized Ar/Kr/F2mixture by a factor of 4.5.

Pearlescent plates whose density is matched to a solvent medium form stable suspensions in which the plate orientation can be switched by magnetic and electric fields. The time frame for these effects is of the order of seconds to minutes, the visual optical effect being a change from a strong reflective pearl essence to a transparent state.

摘要:
A guided‐wave interferometer capable of modulating 1.3‐&mgr;m radiation via the electro‐optic effect has been fabricated in GaAs. The interferometer uses three‐guide couplers as the input and output sections and single‐mode slab‐coupledp+‐n−‐n+rib waveguides fabricated by means of Be‐ion implantation for the two active arms. An extinction of ≊14.5 dB of the output signal from the center guide is obtained with 22 V applied to one arm of the interferometer. Interferometers of this type should be capable of large signal modulation out to 5–10 GHz.

A high‐power room‐temperature CO laser using a high convective‐flow speed is described in this paper. With a simple conventional laser tube, a maximum laser output of 38.8 W/m and a maximum efficiency of 20.7% were obtained.

摘要:
It is shown that CO2‐laser radiation‐induced periodic structures on the surface of metallic targets result in a dramatic increase (by up to one order of magnitude) in the sample absorptivity. This behavior has made it possible to gain new insight into the thermal coupling of powerful CO2‐laser radiation with the initially highly reflectant metallic surfaces.

摘要:
Previous work on high overtone bulk longitudinal mode resonators in yittrium aluminum garnet has demonstrated loadedQvalues in excess of 50 000 at frequencies near 2 GHz. These resonators are excited by sputtered ZnO thin‐film transducers disposed on the substrate to provide a response in transmission. Herein we report the development of ZnO film shear mode transducers and their use in the excitation of temperature stable cuts of LiTaO3.

摘要:
A new method which suppresses target preheating by hot electrons is proposed. The suppression was verified by means of particle measurements on the rear side of a foil irradiated by a CO2laser with a thick plate placed in front of the irradiated foil to absorb the energetic electrons which preferentially expand from the critical surface. The results can be explained by the generation of the electrostatic field between the foil and the plate.

摘要:
We report oninsitudetection of diatomic products of plasma sputtering and reactive ion etching using the technique of laser‐induced fluorescence. The diatomic molecules SiN, SiO, and SiF are observed in the gas phase when a silicon surface is subjected to ion bombardment in plasmas containing N2, O2, and CF4, respectively. Information about the production mechanisms is obtained from the measured product concentrations under varying plasma conditions.

摘要:
The excitation of plasma waves by two laser beams, whose frequency difference is approximately the plasma frequency, is analyzed. Our nonlinear analysis is fully relativistic and includes mismatching of the laser beat frequency to the plasma frequency, time dependent laser amplitudes, and an applied transverse magnetic field (surfatron). For a given beat frequency, laser power, and plasma density, we find the peak accelerating electric field and its phase velocity. The transverse magnetic field is found to increase the effective plasma frequency, but has little effect on the plasma dynamics.
