摘要:
We report on a quantum counter which converts far‐infrared radiation to visible light. The 891‐Ghz radiation of an HCN laser, absorbed in optically pumped ruby by the transition E¯ (2E) →2A¯ (2E), was detected by an increasedR2fluorescence. By Zeeman splitting of the2Elevels the narrow‐band detector was tuned to the laser line.

摘要:
Background signals which appear in Coherent anti‐Stokes Raman spectroscopy and in the Raman‐induced Kerr effect can be eliminated using polarization technqiues based upon four‐wave mixing. Specific polarization conditions will suppress all signals with the exception of those arising from Raman modes. The interference between resonant and background contributions is eliminated, and undistorted line shapes are obtained.

摘要:
Highly efficient second‐harmonic generation using a titanium in‐diffused LiNbO3three‐dimensional optical waveguide was performed with the cw Nd : YAG laser at 1.064‐&mgr;m wavelength. The phase‐matching condition to convert the TE00fundamental frequency to the TM00or TM20second harmonic was demonstrated by adjusting the crystal temperature. The conversion efficiency is 1.5×10−4at 2‐mW fundamental input power under the phase‐matching condition. By using a low‐loss LiNbO3optical waveguide, equipped with highly reflective cavity mirrors on the input and output surfaces, parametric oscillation is expected.

摘要:
We have parameterized the times to arc formation in CO2 : N2 : He mixtures using a TEA configuration which produces homogeneous 10‐liter laser discharges. The onset of arcing is suppressed by increasing the helium or decreasing the CO2concentration. Arcs are also suppressed by adding a low‐ionization‐potential seedant such as tripropylamine. Direct variation of the uv spark intensity which establishes the initial preionization has minimal impact on the arc formation process.

摘要:
A new type of waveguide CO2laser with a previously proposed waveguide structure and a uniform transverse but horizontal (parallel to the waveguide surface) excitation is reported. The waveguide consists of a pair of slightly curved parallel plates which have a low‐loss transmission and a self‐focusing property; flat mirrors are set directly at both ends of the waveguide. The laser provides 30 W peak power at the repetition frequency of 3 kHz at pressures as high as 250 Torr. The output beam is 70% horizontally polarized, indicating laser oscillation mainly in the TE1waveguide mode within the resonator.

Thin niobium films can be switched from a superconducting to a resistive state permanently by application of a short electrical pulse. Application of a short pulse of opposite polarity returns the film to the superconducting state.

摘要:
A preionized transverse electric‐discharge‐pumped N+2charge‐transfer laser oscillating on the (B2&Sgr;+u−X2&Sgr;+g) transition of N+2is reported. Peak power of 180 kW in a 8‐nsec FWHM laser pulse has been obtained with a 0.1% mixture of N2in helium at a total pressure of 3 atm. The most intense laser oscillation occurs on the (0,1) vibrational transition at 427.8 nm.

摘要:
We describe a thin‐film laser with a Fabry‐Perot cavity. The cavity is chemically etch into a (100) ‐cut silicon substrate and filled with rhodamine 6G doped polyurethane. Overfilling of the cavity provides the passage for the output. A nitrogen laser serves as pump source.

摘要:
The passive mode‐locking characteristics of Nd:lanthanum beryllate (Nd:BEL) have been studied for the two linearly polarized laser transitions at 1.070 and 1.079 &mgr;m. Streak‐camera measurements of pulse duration and spectral broadening in the pulse‐train emission show that Nd:BEL can generate minimum‐bandwidth pulses of ⩽15 psec, some 2–3 times shorter than for Nd:YAG.
