摘要:
An experimental integrated optical version of the Mach‐Zehnder interferometer switch, analogous to the microwave balanced bridge, is reported. The bridge is formed by 3‐&mgr;m‐wide Ti‐diffused strip waveguides in LiNbO3and the switch utilizes electro‐optical tuning to achieve 3‐dB operation of the directional couplers. The switching voltage required to switch between the states, corresponding to a &pgr; phase shift in one arm, equals 14.8 V. The cross talk between channels that corresponds to the extinction ratio when operated as an on‐off modulator is −21.6 dB.

摘要:
The observation of photosensitivity in Ge‐doped core optical fibers is reported. The photosensitivity is manifested by light‐induced refractive‐index changes in the core of the waveguide. Narrowband reflectors in a guide structure have been fabricated using this photosensitivity and the resulting DFB reflectors employed as laser mirrors in a cw gas laser in the visible.

摘要:
A broadband 2.5‐ns‐long argon excimer photolytic source was used to initiate the reaction sequence resulting in the formation of Kr2F*. The resulting fluorescence signal at 400 nm depended on the radiative and quenching processes of Kr2* as well as Kr2F*. The radiative lifetime of Kr2F* was found to be 181±12 ns. The rate constants for quenching by F2and Kr are 4.3±0.4×10−10and 6.9±0.7×10−15cm3 s−1, respectively. The Kr2* coupledlu,Oulifetime is 280±30 ns and the rate constant for quenching of Kr2* by F2is 2.1±0.2×10−10cm3 s−1.

摘要:
An electrodeless CO2waveguide laser with transverse rf pumping is described. In the rf cw mode, the laser emits up to 0.6 W at 100 Torr. In the rf pulse mode, atmospheric operation has been achieved with pulse duration of 20 &mgr;s and peak power of a few watts at a repetition rate of 300 Hz.

摘要:
Lasing has been demonstrated on the2P1/2–2P3/2transition in atomic iodine by optically pumping I2vapor to dissociation with a flashlamp‐pumped tunable dye laser. Lasing at 1.315 &mgr; has been observed for pump wavelengths from 5010 to 4930 A˚. The device holds promise as a rapidly pulsed gain diagnostic for existing or future iodine systems.

摘要:
A new GaAs injection laser is reported with dual output beams at one mirror. The device is fabricated by incorporating a branching taper in the optical cavity. Minor changes in the layer parameters allow device operation either as a power divider or a mode splitter. One dominant longitudinal mode with suppression of unwanted structure is observed due to coupling of dual optical cavities.

摘要:
We report a simple intensity modulator in GaAlAs waveguiding structures. The optical attenuation associated with Schottky‐barrier contacts defining metal‐gap channels is controlled by an applied voltage. A modulation depth of 88% was measured at a wavelength of 1.06 &mgr;m with a bias of 25 V in a device 8.5 mm long.

摘要:
This report is about the preparation and the optical transmission loss of rf‐sputtered SiO2‐Ta2O5films that are suitable for use as transmission media in integrated optical circuits. It is shown that the films, which can be produced with a refractive‐index range from 1.46 to 2.08 at 6328 A˚ wavelength by suitably selecting the ratio of the target constituents, exhibit a low optical transmission loss of less than 0.8 dB/cm for the TE0mode.
