摘要:
The beam from an EHD ion source using liquid gallium has been shown to have a brigtness of 0.9×105A cm−2 sr−1at 21 kV and an energy spread of 12 eV at 10‐&mgr;A total current. The effective source diameter was 0.2 &mgr;m as imaged by a 2‐cm‐long Einzel lens with a 0.12‐mm aperture. Cesium was significantly poorer and mercury much poorer than gallium.

摘要:
We have calculated the behavior of composite‐shell DT‐filled targets irradiated by constant‐power (’’unshaped’’) 1‐MeV electron beam pulses. The outer part of the shell (the ’’ablator’’) is composed of a lower‐Zmetal than the high‐density inner part (the ’’pusher’’). The lower‐Zablator decreases the bremsstrahlung heating of the pusher. The resulting colder and denser pusher is more effective. Breakeven requires about 360 TW deposited for 8 ns in a target about 3 mm in diameter. This is less than half the power required for targets composed of a single high‐density metal shell filled with DT.

The presence of the &ggr; crystalline phase in polyvinylidene fluoride is shown to enhance the thermally stimulated current response around room temperature by at least 50 times. Infrared absorption and thermally stimulated current are correlated.

摘要:
Picosecond pulses from a mode‐locked cw dye laser have been compressed in time to produce pulses as short as a few tenths of a picosecond. Dynamic spectroscopic investigations of the laser pulses reveal temporal asymmetry and frequency chirping on a subpicosecond time scale.

摘要:
Pulse propagation in a photodissociative iodine laser amplifier is investigated both experimentally and numerically. Pulse reshaping and shortening occur in agreement with theory. It is found that pulse shortening by gain saturation is impractical for subnanosecond pulses.

摘要:
The results of experiments that measure the spectral emittance &egr;&lgr;(hence absorptance) at 3.8‐&mgr; wavelength for 6061 aluminum alloy and 9606 pyroceram at elevated temperatures are reported. &egr;&lgr;for 6061 aluminum was measured within the molten state over the surface temperature range of 1200–2100 °F. For 9606 pyroceram, &egr;&lgr;was measured between 1000 and 2000 °F. The data shows that for aluminum, &egr;&lgr;increases linearly with temperature from 0.138 at 1200 °F to 0.190 at 2100 °F. For pyroceram, &egr;&lgr;has an initial value of 0.91 at 1000 °F and slowly decreases to 0.68 at 2000 °F.

摘要:
Laser action has been obtained in atmospheric‐pressure mixtures of 0.1% F2/2% Kr/97.9% Ar at 248.5 and 249.5 nm with electron‐beam‐controlled discharge pumping. The laser and discharge characteristics are explored as a function of discharge electric field and total mixture pressure. These preliminary measurements indicate laser output energies up to 6 mJ with a pulse length of 90 nsec. Limiting efficiencies for this laser system are discussed.

摘要:
We demonstrate a method for maintaining a large fraction (≳17%) of an atomic sodium beam in an excited state. The method uses the Doppler shift to produce, from a single‐frequency laser source, a frequency spectrum which prevents optical pumping of the atoms into either of the hyperfine levels of the ground state. A small magnetic field is used to prevent pumping into a magnetic sublevel of the ground state. The method may be used for both theP1/2andP3/2fine‐structure levels.

摘要:
Laser action in OCS, CO2, N2O, C2H2, and CS2has been obtained by resonant vibrational‐to‐vibrational (V‐V) energy transfer from CO gas excited by a frequency‐doubled CO2TEA laser. Output energies up to 0.5 mJ, energy conversion efficiencies as high as 7%, and thresholds as low as 0.1 mJ have been observed.
