摘要:
Continuous parametric amplification of signals near 10.6 &mgr; has been obtained. Amplification is caused by interaction with a strong pumping beam in sulfur hexafluoride gas, a saturable absorber. Nonlinear polarization of individual SF6molecules is considered to be responsible.

摘要:
Measurements of the nonlinear interaction in SF6of two linearly polarized CO2laser signals as a function of the angle between the two planes of polarization have been made. The angular dependence of the interaction suggests that several SF6vibrational‐rotational transitions are responsible for 10.6‐&mgr; absorption.

摘要:
The electron energy distribution function has been calculated for the plasma of a CO2&sngbnd;N2&sngbnd;He mixture using available electron—molecule cross‐section data. Rates at which electrons transfer energy to the inelastic levels of CO2and N2were then determined. With this information, the relationship of the various electron—molecule energy exchange processes to laser performance was studied. For conditions typical of CO2lasers, approximately 17% of the power transferred to the CO2and N2was found to be available for conversion to optical power. Estimates of maximum available optical power were made and found to be consistent with experimental values.

摘要:
A technique is described for limiting the axial propagation of the absorption zone in laser‐induced gas breakdown. A theoretical model suggests that the resulting localized energy deposition should allow heating of the plasma to temperatures comparable with those obtained when a focused laser beam heats small particles in vacuum. Preliminary experimental results confirm the localization of the absorption zone.

We report noncollinear single‐cavity optical parametric oscillation with energy conversion of 45% using LiNbO3pumped with a ruby laser. A new method of tuning is employed. Partial compensation for Poynting vector walk off is provided.

The influence of grain, subgrain, or dislocation cell sizedor superconducting critical flux gradientdB/drwas investigated in a single phase Nb‐33 at. % Zr alloy. By appropriate heat treatments,dwas varied from 0.25 to 1500 &mgr;. A monotonic decrease of more than one hundred‐fold indB/draccompanied this thousand‐fold increase ind. At a givend, the maximum increase indB/drobtained from precipitation of a second phase does not exceed a factor of about 30.
