摘要:
Surface charge was successfully transported by means of a series of overlapping conductor‐insulator‐semiconductor capacitor plates. The transport mechanism involves a field‐driven diffusionlike phenomenon which is analyzed theoretically, and the results are compared to experiments performed on simple structures.

摘要:
It is shown in this letter that the measured velocity‐electric field (v‐E) characteristic ofn‐type GaAs differes substantially from the intrinsicv‐Echaracteristic if the doping density of the sample is nonuniform. A simple analysis of the effect is given which compares favorably with a more complete calculation and with experimental results. The heretofore unexplained large variation in measuredv‐Echaracteristics is readily predicted by the present theory if reasonable assumptions are made regarding sample inhomogeneity.

摘要:
Spontaneous mode locking has been observed in a high‐pressure CO2laser. The mode‐locked pulses were found to be separated by 2L/c. Pulse separations as short as 11 nsec were achieved. The pulse shapes suggest that two axial cavity modes dominate the laser behavior.

摘要:
The Schottky barrier height at the interface between metallic sodium and vacuum‐cleavedn‐type Si has been found to be 0.43±0.02 eV. Ther barrier height was determined from measurements of the reverse current‐voltage characteristic of Schottky diodes in a vacuum of 10−8Torr and at 288°K. The measured value is close to the results of other workers on the alkaline‐earth metals and shows that the barrier height is strongly controlled by the surface‐state density at the metal‐semiconductor interface.

摘要:
Large‐amplitude stress waves have been generated in solids by means of a very high current pulsed electron beam. The electron beam has an average energy of 3 MeV, current of 40 000 A, and pulse duration of approximately 70 nsec. The back surface velocity profiles were measured using a laser‐Doppler interferometer. Data obtained for 6061‐T6 aluminum indicated a slow rise of the plastic wave, thus suggesting the importance of strain rate effects. The utility of the technique for materials research at high pressures and temperatures is discussed.

摘要:
The first cw operation of a Raman laser is reported. Using a 5‐&mgr;m CO laser we have observed two stimulated Stokes lines by scattering from spin‐flip excitations of conduction electrons in InSb in a magnetic field. Observed threshold powers were about 200 mW for the first Stokes line.

摘要:
We present a theoretical model for the propagation of plane electromagnetic waves through a discontinuously inhomogeneous magnetoplasma. The model predicts selective excitation of magnetic resonances in the ordinary Voigt configuration and electric resonances in the extraordinary. Measurements of microwave transmission through powderedn‐type InSb in an applied magnetic field verify this prediction and establish the character of related resonances previously observed in the Faraday configuration. We conclude that the particle‐size‐independent resonances of the system are electric dipole in character and thus appear in its effective permittivity, while the size‐dependent resonances are magnetic and contribute to the effective permeability. Formulas for effective wave propagation constants are given.

摘要:
Annular relativistic electron beams carrying currents of 30–40 kA at energies of 200–500 keV have been propagated through a cylindrically symmetric, annular, ridged waveguide. An interaction between the electron beam and a backward wave in the guide has been observed. This leads to oscillations in the range 7.8–9.7 GHz at power levels of about 10 MW in a 30‐nsec pulse.
