摘要:
AbstractSome performance properties for turbine, hydraulic and gear oils were correlated with changes in chemical structure for incorporated base oils. Blends with different viscosity grades were formulated from different neutral oils, brightstocks and additives.Different statistical approaches were used to evaluate the degree of fit for these correlations. The derived models were considered at a minimum of 99% confidence. Results clarified the role of non‐hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds, either by type or by content, in changing the performance behaviour for tested industrial oil

摘要:
AbstractThin film transducers, sputtered onto a tooth flank, are used to measure temperature, pressure and oil film thickness profiles in gear contact. The former two are resistance sensors, while the film thickness sensor functions as a capacitive transducer. Experiments were carried out with ground and hobbed gears. The measurements are repeated after the tooth flank has been polished. The differences of the measured values for the ‘rough’ and ‘smooth’ surfaces are used for comparisons between differently machined surfaces. An EHD simulation programme has been developed which calculates film thickness and contact pressure, also taking surface roughness into

摘要:
AbstractPolymeric viscosity index (VI) improver solutions in oils suffer from both temporary and permanent viscosity losses in high shear hydrodynamic and elastohydrodynamic (EHD) contacts. In some cases in EHD contacts, these losses can be so severe that the additive makes negligible contribution to oil film thickness. This paper describes the use of a combination of optical interferometry and FTIR micro‐reflectance spectroscopy to measure the effectiveness, and to observe directly the behaviour, of conventional VI improver solutions within rolling and sliding EHD contacts. The study shows the extent to which polymers enter EHD contacts and charts the degradation that they suffer therei

摘要:
AbstractQuantitative evaluation was used to study the effect of surface roughness on wear behaviour of steel under rolling with sliding partial EHD conditions, and to clarify the effect of an additive and operating environment. It was found that the wear behaviour under conditions of lubrication with mineral oil was governed by the oxidation of the surface, regardless of whether the lubricant was formulated was with or and without additive. It was also found that wear was accelerated by the addition of fatty acid in the presence of oxygen, whereas it was not affected for lubrication with additive‐free mineral oil. It is considered that the acceleration of wear by addition of fatty acid is closely related to the oxidation of the surface during frictio
