AbstractThe equations of motion and energy are solved numerically for fully developed laminar flow of a power law fluid in a vertical pipe with constant heat flux at the wall. Density is assumed to be the only temperature dependent physical property of the fluid. Temperature profiles, velocity profiles, and Nusselt numbers are presented as functions of the power law exponent and the ratio of the Grashof number divided by the Reynolds number.

摘要:
AbstractA procedure based on kinetic principles is presented for the development of models for the adsorption of mixtures of gases in any number of layers by solid adsorbents. Equations of state for two‐dimensional gas mixtures which are thermodynamically consistent with the adsorption models are also presented. The constants in the adsorption models for mixtures are obtained from the isotherms for the pure components. Good accuracy for the predicted adsorption of mixtures for the data available was obtained by use of a model for the adsorption of mixtures in bimolecular layer

AbstractThe self‐diffusion coefficient of methane has been measured from 150° to 350°K. and from 200 to 5,000 lb./sq. in. abs. At constant temperature, the density‐diffusivity product is constant up to neighborhood of critical density and decreases sharply above that density. The temperature dependence of the low density data agrees with Chapman‐Enskog theory. The Lennard‐Jones (6‐12) parameters determined from the low density data (ϵ/k= 130°K., σ = 3.85Å.) are in good agreement with those determined by other methods. A correlation for the self diffusion coefficient for methane has been developed which may provide predictions of other spherical

AbstractSurface renewal models based on wave induced drift currents are proposed to explain gas absorption data in deep tanks. A model assuming plug surface flow was found to best represent the available data for the absorption of carbon dioxide, oxygen, propylene, and helium into water. Velocities obtained by fitting the mass transfer data agree with experimental velocities obtained from dye studies.

AbstractLow temperature, phase‐equilibria data for binary systems containing hydrogen, helium, and neon were used to develop a correlation relating deviations from the geometric mean combining rule for the characteristic energy parameter to the ionization potentials of the component species. With the exception of oxygen systems, this relatively simple relationship correctly predicts published deviations, determined by different methods, for a number of systems within expected uncertainties. It is shown that consideration of attractive forces only, as done by Hudson and McCoubrey, is inadequate for such prediction

AbstractBy using curve fitting techniques, mathematical formulas are obtained for the catalyst effectiveness factors for nonisothermal first‐order and second‐order irreversible chemical reactions. The effects of intraparticle mass and heat diffusion upon the concentration and temperature profiles in adiabatic and nonadiabatic catalytic reactors are examined. AbstractA mathematical model of a through‐circulation packed bed dryer is presented in this paper. The semitheoretical model treats the case of constant rate drying in a deep bed of granular solids under initially uniform drying conditions. Experimental data for drying in superheated steam, mixtures of superheated steam and air, and air alone showed good agreement with predictions of the model.Based on the model, a static optimization method is developed for optimal operation of a continuous through‐circulation dryer subject to the inequality constraints of maximum permissible air‐horsepower per unit bed area and maximum permissible local final moisture content in the bed.
