AbstractDistillation foreruns from East Indian sandalwood oil (Santalum albumL.), representing 5–8% of the oil, have been investigated using fractional distillation, preparative column chromatography, gas liquid chromatography (GLC.), and chemical treatments. This allowed the isolation and characterization by their spectral data of 46 compounds. 32 of them were newly identified sandalwood oil constituents including 4 novel substances: santalone (2), 4‐methylcyclohexa‐1,3‐dien‐1‐yl methyl ketone (4), 5,6‐dimethyl‐5‐norbornen‐exo‐2‐ol (7), and (E)‐5‐(2,3‐dimethyl‐3‐nortricyclyl)‐pent‐3‐en‐2‐one (20). The other constituents identified were 1‐furfuryl‐pyrrole (10) and 10 phenols accompanied by 17 terpene and sesquiterpene derivatives.Endo‐2,endo‐3‐dimethyl‐norbornan‐exo‐2‐ol (6), an α‐santenol (z), precursor, was present in the last group of constituents. AbstractThe synthesis of 2,4,6‐cycloheptatrienethione (1) was accomplished by reaction of tropone and phosphorus pentasulfide. Although1proved to be extremely unstable in concentrated solution, its UV. spectrum was measured, the ε‐values being determined indirectly by hydrolysis to tropone. The proof of structure rests on analytical data, conversion to tropone oxime on reaction with hydroxylamine and reaction with the sodium salt of malonitrile to give 2‐amino‐3‐cyano‐3aH‐cyclohepta[b]thiophene (4) which rearranged on chromatography to give what is probably the corresponding 8H‐compound (5). Synthesis of RecifeiolideThe synthesis of the mould metabolite recifeiolide (VIII), a 12‐membered ring lactone, is described. 1,3‐Butandiol was resolved with (−)‐camphanic acidvia(R)‐1‐iodo‐3‐butanol (II) into (R)‐3‐hydroxybutyl triphenyl phosphonium iodide (III).Wittigcondensation of the phosphorane derived from III with methyl 8‐oxo‐octanoate (V) led to the methyltrans‐11‐hydroxy‐8‐dodecenoate (VI). The corresponding hydroxy acid VII was transformed into the S‐(2‐pyridyl) carbothioate which cyclizes under the influence of silver ion to the lactone VIII. AbstractDas konventionelle Reinigungsverfahren von Glucose‐6‐phosphat‐dehydrogenase (G6PDH) (E.C. 1.1.1.49) aus Rinder‐Nebennierenrinde wird durch eine einzige affinitätschromatographische Trennungsstufe ersetzt. Die Anwendung einer mit Nicotinamid‐Adenin‐Dinukleotid‐Phosphat (NADP) substituierten Sepharose ergibt aus dem Rohextrakt eine Protein‐Fraktion, aus welcher nach Einengen die G6PDH unmittelbar kristallisiert. Die Reinheit des Enzyms wird durch analytische Gel‐Elektrophorese sowie durch Vergleich mit schon bestehenden. Literaturdaten geprüft. AbstractDurch partielle reduktive Fragmentierung von 9,9a‐Benzo‐9a‐homotriaster‐9‐en‐3,7‐dion (6) mit Zinkstaub in Eisessig wurde 61% 9,10‐Benzo‐tricyclo[3.3.2.02,8]‐dec‐9‐en‐3,7‐dion (3) und daraus mit Isopropenyl‐acetat 47% 3,7‐Diacetoxy‐benzo‐bullvalen (4) erhalten. Eine relativ schnelle degenerierteCope‐Umlagerung in4liess sich durch die Temperaturabhängigkeit von dessen1H‐NMR.‐Spektrum aufzeigen. Mildere Acetylierung von3lieferte das Mono‐enolacetat9.Unter etwas energischeren Bedingungen der Zink/Eisessig‐Reduktion wurden beide Cyclopropanringe in6aufgespalten, wobei 90% eines Gemisches, hauptsächlich bestehend aus 9,10‐benzo‐bicyclo[3.3.2]dec‐9‐en‐3,7‐diol (7) entstand. Behandlung von6mit Zinkstaub in Acetanhydrid lieferte – offenbar wegen noch unübersichtlichen Unterschieden in den Reaktionsbedingungen – einmal 50% des oben erwähnten tricyclischen Diketons3, ein andermal 45% 3,8‐Diacetoxy‐9,10‐benzo‐bicyclo[3.3.2]deca‐2,9‐dien‐7‐on (10) und sonst Gemische von3und10, sowie von einem Produkt, für das die Struktur eines 3,7‐Diacetoxy‐9,10
