摘要:
AbstractA representative sample (2024 children, 7–16 years old) from fluoridated and nonfluoridated areas was studied. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data on oral health habits; caries diagnoses were made by local dentists in municipal dental clinics. In the fluoridated area a positive correlation existed between toothbrushing frequency and occurrence of dental caries. In the nonfluoridated area the correlation was negative. This difference in the effect of toothbrushing on caries was statistically significant. Sugar exposure increased the differenc

摘要:
AbstractA representative sample (2865 persons, 7–16 years old) of children visiting municipal denial clinics was studied. Caries diagnoses were made by local dentists; structured questionnaires were used to collect data on fluoride and sugar exposures. Fluoridated pipe water was used by 26% of the children, 63% had supervised fluoride rinses and/or paintings, and 69% used fluoridated dentifrice. Water fluoridation prevented caries best. No major differences were observed between single and combined applications of different topical fluoride preventive measures as they are applied in everyday practic

摘要:
AbstractDental treatment needs of 230 children aged 4and 5 years and 288aged 9 and 10 years who were lifetime residents of two towns, one fluoridated and the other non‐fluoridated, were costed on the Resource Related Index. This index is based on the British National Health Service scale of fees for general dental practitioners. The overall cost of dental treatment required by 4‐and 5‐year‐olds in the fluoridated community was 45% less than in the non‐fluoridated community. The corresponding difference for 9‐ and 10‐year‐olds was 47%. The differences in the cost of treatment for dental caries only (fillings, extractions and general anesthetics) were 56% in 4‐and 5‐year‐olds and 76% in 9‐and 10‐year‐olds in favour of the fluoridated community. In the latter community, no child examined required denial extractions under general anaesthesia. Certain assumptions made in the study and the implications of the findings in terms of cost savings brought about by

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of the investigation was to assess the attitudes concerning water fluoridation among dentists actively engaged in the practice of dentistry in Sweden. A 25% random sample was selected from the aforementioned population of 6,669 dentists. A questionnaire was sent out by mail in 1974/75. The rate of return was 93%. A 99% confidence estimate indicated that 60–66% of Swedish dentists approved a water fluoridation; 58% would welcome fluoridation of their own community water supplies; 56% expressed a willingness to sign a petition to the Parliament requesting that water fluoridation again be permitted. Approximately 11 % were not certain about the effectiveness of water fluoridation in preventing dental decay. One‐third of the respondents were uncertain about the safety of the technical procedures; 20% were undecided concerning the possibility of combining procedures for topical application of fluorides with water fluoridation, and 15 % stated that topical application of fluorides could not be combined with water fluoridation. More than 19% were not able to report the F‐content of their own community water sup

摘要:
AbstractA questionnaire on dental knowledge, attitude and behavior was presented to Dutch suburban children in the 6th grade (n= 399). The mean age was 12.3 years. The children scored relatively high on knowledge and attitude. Girls scored better on knowledge and attitude than boys. However, the differences were small. Between socioeconomic classes no differences were found in knowledge scores. The attitude of the higher socioeconomic classes was more positive than that of the lower classes. With regard to behavior more than 90% of the children reported that they have their own toothbrush, use toothpaste containing fluoride and visit the dentist every 6 months. Further it was found that 69 % eat sweets several times a day, 53 % offer sweets in school when they celebrate their birthday, 28% brush their teeth less than twice a day, 45% sometimes forget to brush their teeth and 44% use fluoride tablets. No clear differences in behavior between boys and girls were found. The higher the socioeconomic class of the children the higher the toothbrushing frequency, the more fluoride tablets are used and the lower the sweet consumption frequency. Although almost all children stated that their parents consider toothbrushing important, 24% were not supervised. It is also suggested that effectiveness of dental health education on behavior should not be evaluated in short term studies.

摘要:
AbstractThis report describes a variety of demographic, socioeconomic and dental characteristics of 254 (145 male, 109 female) participants in a longitudinal study of oral physiology and aging. All individuals are part of the U.S. National Institute on Aging's Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Subjects are generally in middle to upper middle socioeconomic strata, well educated and in good health (about 75% not taking prescription medication). Most participants practice regular oral hygiene habits and receive regular and comprehensive dental care. Less than 4% of all subjects are edentulous and the average number of natural teeth present for all participants was about 23. Data are presented on DMFT scores, cervical caries (active and restored) scores and gingival and periodontal disease indices for males by age group (20–39, 40–59, 60–88 years) and for females by menopause status (pre‐,

摘要:
AbstractLoss of attachment as measured by a portion of Ramfjord's Index (PDI) was determined in 383, 12–16‐year‐old schoolchildren in rural Juniata County, PA. Prevalence and distributions were tabulated for sex, last dental visit, and type of treatment received. Denial knowledge test scores, toothbrushing effectiveness, periodontal status and oral cleanliness were determined at annual intervals Irom Spring '75 to Spring '79. Mean scores were contrasted with bone loss measurements. 47.3% had loss of attachment (>1 mm) including 24.5% with 2 mm or more of attachment loss per mouth. Females (41.0%) had significantly lower prevalence rates than males (52.7%). Students who visited a dentist in the last 6 months and who received scaling had less bone loss, lower GI, PII, PI, and QHI scores. An inverse relationship was found between dental knowledge and the other variables measured. Similar patterns were seen with high, medium and low bone loss groups. Many variables in this study were associated with bone loss, including: plaque, dental knowledge, dental behavior (toothbrushing and visiting a dental clinic), recent treatment received and sex. None appeared more significant than the o

摘要:
AbstractAmong 20 333 individuals aged 15 years and above, examined in urban, suburban and rural regions in the middle of Sweden, leukoedema was found in 48.9%. The sex difference, males 61.9% and females 35.9%, was highly significant (P<0.001). The condition was most prevalent in the age groups 25–34 and 15–24 years being 60.6 and 57.3%, respectively. Leukoedema was significantly more prevalent among individuals with some daily tobacco habit (60.0%) than among those without (36.3%) (P<0.001), being most prevalent among smokers. The lesion seemed to be related to the amount of smoking since it was most prevalent among heavy smokers and also the most clearly established lesions were found in this gr
