摘要:
AbstractReorganisation of dental services in Britain gives new opportunities for planning. Geographical methodology provides new techniques. An elementary spatial analysis of variations in dental health in Newcastle Area Health Authority (Teaching) shows that dental health varies with availability and access to treatment facilities. Opposite types of geographical distribution of community (School) and general dental services are illustrated showing location biases for each type of service. The evaluation of the spatial distribution of dental services is shown to be basic to planning and a key to improved dental health.

摘要:
AbstractPartial recording of dental caries prevalence and incidence has been frequently recommended and employed. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the partial recording of restorative and exodonlic needs using an alternating diagonal half‐mouth examination gives results which can accurately represent complete recording. Diagonal half‐mouth recording was simulated by computer and gave results which closely represented the complete recording of the same sample of subjects. Partial recording lost a low proportion of the information collected by complete recording. Less frequently observed items of treatment showed highest proportions of information loss. If increases in the number of subjects in a sample can be achieved clue to reductions in resources required for each subject, a proportional loss of information may be turned to a proportional gain of information. Reasons for the current recommendations against a diagonal half‐mouth examination for the recording of restorative and exodontic needs are postulated and disc

摘要:
AbstractThe relationship of toothbrushing to dental decay has remained unclear. In the present study an effort was made to throw more light on this problem. Clinical and interview data were obtained from 212 males. Potential confounding risk indicators were controlled by a multivariate confounder summarizing score. In general it was found that the values of caries prevalence indicator were consistently higher for sporadic toothbrushers. It was concluded that the current study provides evidence in favor of a positive association between toothbrushing and low caries prevalence.

摘要:
AbstractThe attitudes toward National Health Insurance held by 126 second year dental students and 108 second year dental hygiene students enrolled in the state of Wisconsin, U.S.A., were measured and compared with the attitudes held by practicing dentists in the U.S.A. Although some similarities were noted, marked differences were revealed, with students, generally, preferring broader coverage and more government involvement than practicing dentists. There is virtually no published data in this area, and more research is needed, as the success or failure of any National Health Insurance plan depends critically on the altitudes of both health care providers and those studying to become health care providers.

摘要:
AbstractEighteen dentists working in the same School Dental Service participated in a calibration trial with the purpose of reducing interexaminer disagreement on radiographic diagnosis of approximal caries. The calibration program was in two stages: firstly, discussion in small groups and, secondly, the use of a reference standard. The effect of the training programs on interexaminer disagreement was limited, but a statistically significant decrease in the number of D‐surfaces recorded per child was observed. The finding that the major part of the error variance was due to random error, rather than systematic error, may explain why the calibration program was unsuccessful at reducing erro

摘要:
AbstractThe validity of the Podshadley and Haley Patient Hygiene Performance Index (PHPI) and the Silness and Löe Index (PlI) was investigated. Fifty children aged 11–12 years were examined by a single examiner and plaque collected from all accessible smooth surfaces, and dry‐weight determined. Statistically, there were significant positive correlations between plaque dry weight and PlI (r = 0.61)&PHPI (r = 0.63). The results indicate that both indices were equally good indicators of the amount of plaque on accessible smooth surf

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of the present study was to assemble data on the prevalence of dental caries among workers in the sweets industry. Three confectionaries were selected for the study. Most employees consented to be examined and were included in the study. The participants were distributed into two main groups: production line workers (228 participants) and non‐production line workers (195 participants). The control group consisted of a group of production line workers from five textile industrial establishments; 812 in all. The results indicate that the mean DMFT values recorded for the sweets industry workers were significantly higher than those recorded for the control group. Significantly higher mean DMFT values recorded in the production line workers, as compared with the non‐production line workers, in the confectionary industry were assumed to be attributed to a higher consumption of sweets and closer exposure to sugar dust. Mean DMFT values were found to increase significantly in relation to the duration of exposure to the effect of carbohydrates in both groups of workers in the sweets indus

摘要:
AbstractA convenience sample of 153 boys and girls, aged 3‐16 years, inhabiting Wuvulu Island were examined for the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease and for oral hygiene status. Average of teeth and surface scores for the group were 2.08 and 3.35, respectively, while average DMF teeth and surface scores were 0.90 and 1.20, respectively. Of the sample, 30.7% were caries free. Oral hygiene was poor and males had significantly more periodontal disease than females. While primary teeth were about three times more susceptible to caries than permanent teeth, tooth loss due to caries was not a problem in primary teeth. The authors discuss findings of other researchers and reasons for the greater prevalence of caries in primary teet

摘要:
AbstractClinical examinations of 276 5‐year‐old children were carried out twice yearly for 2 1/2 years, and a further 1104 11‐12‐year‐old children were examined annually for 3 years. Fifty per cent of permanent first molar teeth had erupted by 6.4 years; the mean age of eruption for permanent second molar teeth was 12.2 years. One year after these mean eruption dates over 10% of first molars and 45% of second permanent molars were already carious. Although development of caries was initially slower in permanent first molars, between the ages of 7.5 and 8.5 years the caries increment rose to 18.8%. By the age of 15 years the DMF Was 92% for first and 68% for second molar teeth. The missing and filled proportion of the total DMF rose consistently. This represents the amount of treated caries and exceeded the amount of untreated caries in permanent first molars at all age levels. The rate of caries initiation in the present investigation emphasizes that restorative programmes and preventive regimens for children must be based on frequent recall examinations of not more than 6‐monthl

摘要:
AbstractThe prevalence of headache and mandibular dysfunction was studied in 43 patients with unsatisfactory complete dentures waiting for prosthodontic treatment at the Dental Clinic of the National Dental Service in Jokkmokk, Sweden. In addition to answering a questionnaire, all patients underwent a clinical‐functional examination of the masticatory system. Seventeen patients (40%), 15 women and two men, reported recurrent headache. 63% of the men and 83% of the women showed marked clinical signs of mandibular dysfunction. A significant correlation between headache and mandibular dysfunction was found. The low representation of complete denture wearers in clinical series of patients referred for treatment of mandibular dysfunction may be due to a reduced propensity to seek help and a greater willingness to accept a certain degree of dysfunction compared with other peopl
