AbstractA comparison of the number, employment, utilization and activities of dental hygienists in Poland between 1977 and 1982 is described. In spite of a distinct increase in number and better distribution in the country, the employment of hygienists in the oral health service is still low. However, the majority of dental hygienists are employed in the oral health service for children, working mostly as dental assistants doing fluoride prophylaxis and dental health education in addition. The percentage of operating dental hygienists is also low. The need for their preventive activity is great, as the dental caries rate in Polish children is generally high.

AbstractIn this paper Andersen's model of health services utilization is applied to the use of dental visits. This analysis builds on previous work by including clinical oral health indicators rather than self‐reports as measures of need by using a path model to analyze the dynamics of predisposing, enabling and need factors on dental utilization. The sample consisted of 287 volunteers who were employees of a university health center. The path analysis using ordinary least squares found that sex was the most important variable affecting use of services. Men tended to have higher number of visits due to higher need and women more visits regardless of need. A surprising result was that income had no significant effect on volume of dental visits, which contradicts much of the literature in the area. AbstractA postal survey of 295 general dental practitioners (GDP's) in the Greater Glasgow Area Health Board was undertaken to assess their acceptance and attitudes towards the plasma derived hepatitis B vaccine. Only 17% of the 144 dental practitioners who responded to the questionnaire had received the vaccine. Practitioners' reservations concerning their acceptance of the vaccine ranged from fear of side effects including AIDS, high cost and fear of recognition as a hepatitis B carrier. Forty‐one percent of GDP's knowingly treated Mow risk' hepatitis B patients in their practices. When questioned of their knowledge of the other related viral causes of hepatitis, 59% were aware of non‐A non‐B hepatitis while only 8% were aware of delta hepatitis. AbstractThe purpose of the present study was to estimate the realistic need for prosthodontic treatment among institutionalized elderly in Denmark. The study population comprised 486 elderly in nursing homes and 199 in hospital long‐term care facilities. The realistic need for treatment was estimated on the basis of the normative and the perceived needs, taking into account the general mental and physical state of each individual as assessed by the charge nurses. The investigation revealed that the majority of the elderly were markedly handicapped, two‐thirds were unable to care for themselves, and 15% were in poor mental condition. Among the residents of nursing homes 67% had a normative need for prosthodontic treatment, e.g. new dentures, relining and/or corrections of occlusion, as compared to 71% of the elderly in hospital long‐term care facilities. However, only 19% of the nursing home residents and 32% of the elderly in long‐term care facilities has a realistic treatment need. The differences between the two groups of elderly are explained by differences in age and general health status. It can be concluded that the realistic need for prosthodontic treatment among institutionalized elderly in Denmark is far from being met, and that this problem can only be solved if given higher priority by the political decision

AbstractIn three cohorts of 70‐yr‐olds in Gothenburg, Sweden, born in 1901/02, 1906/07 and 1911/12, the relationship between oral health and parity was studied in 713 women and between oral health and the reported number of children in 660 men of the same cohorts. For women in all three cohorts, the number of teeth decreased in relation to increasing number of children that they had given birth to. Significantly more women with high parity were edentulous in one or both jaws compared to the other groups. Among parous compared to nulliparous women the age for becoming edentulous occurred earlier. The number of intact teeth was lower in parous compared to nulliparous women. Among the men no relation was found between oral health and the number of their children. When socioeconomic factors were taken into consideration the above described relations between declining dental health and increasing parity remained on about the same level of significance. AbstractDuring a survey into the dental health of 233 elderly people in the Halton Health Authority, subjects' knowledge of the services provided was investigated. Only 5.7% of the sample were found to be regular attenders and assessed need was found to be far greater than perceived need. Questions were set out to discover attitudes to the service, investigated reasons for non‐attendance, knowledge of domiciliary visiting arrangements, where a dental surgery was situated, how subjects could find out about N.H.S. dental charges, costs of dentures and if subjects had a problem in their mouth, who they would turn to for help. AbstractThe incidence and type of dental injuries among Norwegian soccer players were assessed according to the files of the Norwegian Soccer Association. In 1979–83 a total of 7319 injuries were reported. Approximately 20% (1267) were dental injuries. In every fifth case the expenses for necessary dental treatment exceeded the maximum compensation from the insurance company. The majority of the injuries occurred among male players (96.5%). Also the relative frequency of dental injuries was higher in men than in women. The prevalence of dental injuries was highest in the top division, and decreased gradually down through the divisions. Goalkeepers seemed to be more susceptible to injuries than did the other players. Uncomplicated crown fracture of maxillary front teeth was common and accounted for 45% of all dental injurie

AbstractA group of 415 disabled school‐age children representing 10 different disabling conditions (hereafter called diagnostic groups) were examined and DMFT Registered. Parents were interviewed about problems and habits relevant to dental health. The purpose was to study the relationship between different background variables and DMFT. It was assumed that the DMFT might have been influenced by both various predisposing conditions and factors of everyday life. Therefore two indices were made. A multiple classification analysis (MCA) was used to assess the relative importance of different background variables. Age, mother's education, everyday life factors and diagnosis were the variables showing the strongest association with DMFT. Children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy and cystic fibrosis had a higher DMFT than the other diagnostic group
