摘要:
AbstractA controlled evaluation of a 3‐week teacher mediated dental health education curriculum package was undertaken in 35 English secondary schools in three Area Health Authorities. 4500 13–14‐year‐old adolescents were involved. The package emphasized self‐care potential and combined a scientifically accurate message with educational and behavioural science concepts. Evaluation was at the levels of process and outcome using changes in oral hygiene recorded on a random sample (n = 1491) by two trained examiners; self‐complete pre/posttest questionnaires, pupil worksheets and home experiment diaries. Behavioural, cognitive and affective outcomes are reported. Significant improvements in oral hygiene status were recorded at the conclusion of the programme along with large gains in knowledge and positive changes in attitude. Long term follow‐up oral hygiene examinations in six schools (n = 145) conducted in conjunction with a reinforcement programme, indicated a maintenance of the initial improvements in five schools. Further significant improvements were measured after the reinforcem

摘要:
AbstractResults of a 3‐year clinical trial of Delton fissure sealant resin are reported. 41 % of first molar fissures remained fully sealed after 3 years. Significant differences were found between the levels of resin retention produced by the two operators and retention was significantly better on mandibular molars than on maxillary molars. In a separate group of 11‐year‐old children 77% of fissures were full)’sealed after

摘要:
AbstractSupervised toothbrushing with fluoride containing preparations and information on prevention of dental disease was introduced in 1963/64 for the majority of schools in the Canton of Zurich. Standardized examinations were carried out every 4 years, starting in 1963. From 1963 to 1979, DMFT levels decreased by 58–60%. Reductions of DF counts were highest in free smooth surfaces of molars and in anterior teeth, exceeding 90%. In contrast, pit and fissure carious lesions were reduced by 55%. Approximal caries also diminished substantially but the findings cannot be summarized by simple percent reductions. The number of sound primary teeth increased markedly from 1963 to 197

摘要:
AbstractThe relationships between mean DMFT and the mean probability of a decayed tooth requiring restorative or exodontic treatment items among Australian adolescents were studied. Significant relationships were found between mean DMFT and the probability of requiring a one‐surface, two‐surface, or a three‐surface restoration. Relationships between mean DMFT and the probability of requiring a four or more surface restoration or extractions were not significant. The relationships studied may be used to predict the mix of restorative and exodontic items of care needed from data on mean decayed teeth and mean

摘要:
AbstractAs a first step in understanding the relation between racial and individual features which affect dental esthetic values, native Pacific Asians and Caucasians rated facial drawings of females with various occlusal relations. While differences emerged, esthetics ratings were unrelated to racial congruence or to the individual's own malocclusion. Greater tolerance for malocclusion was found in Asians. Implications for dental treatment and perceived need for treatment are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThe aim of the present study was to investigate the dental health of 100 Finnish 4‐6‐year‐old children in Luleå, in the north of Sweden, and to compare data with those from a matched control group of Swedish children of the same age, sex and social background. The study also included altitudes to dental health among the parents. The clinical examination included registration of decayed, extracted and filled teeth and surfaces (deft and defs), gingival bleeding points (GBI) and presence of open bite or crossbite. Posterior bitewings were taken. Data concerning among other things oral habits, dietary habits and fluoride prophylaxis were taken. A questionnaire about the parents' attitudes to their own and their children's dental health as well as their opinion about the dental care received by their children was filled in. The results showed that the average defs in the Finnish group was 12.2 compared to 6.4 in the Swedish group. The percentage of children with a defs>12 was 43% in the Finnish group and 19% in the Swedish. The mean GBI% was 11.2% in the Finnish and 8.2% in the Swedish group. The results showed a statistically significant difference in toothbrushing frequencies between the groups, and a tendency to better dietary habits in the Swedish group. There were no differences in the use of fluoride tablets or fluoridated toothpaste. Forty‐seven percent of the Finnish parents were denture wearers compared to 10% of the Swedish. The attitudes to dental health among the Finnish parents differed from those in the Swedish group. This difference in attitudes together with language problems were the factors found that could explain the difference in dental health between the immigrant group and the Swedi

摘要:
AbstractA combined dental and sociologic investigation was carried out in Leeuwarden, a non‐fluoridated town in the north of the Netherlands. A large group of 14–15‐year‐old schoolchildren was clinically examined. To collect data on attitude, knowledge and behavior regarding dental health, the children were asked to fill out a preceded questionnaire. The mothers of the children were interviewed on these subjects. The sociocultural variables correlated slightly with the caries experience of the children. Only 13% of the variance in caries experience within the group of children could be explained by the independent variables. The single best predictor of the caries experience appeared to be the dental status of the mothers. Though human behavior is supposed to be a strong causal factor in the etiology of caries, this relation was not found in our investigation, just as it is absent in many other studies. The main conclusion is that surveys to estimate the relation between caries and sociocultural variables are of littl

AbstractAn analysis of the symptoms and signs of the Mandibular Pain Dysfunction Syndrome (MDS) provoked by an opening movement of the mandible in a cohort of 140 patients produced a Symptom Index. This Index is compared with a previously described Movement Index for the same patients.

摘要:
AbstractAbout 3000 refugees from Vietnam have come to Norway in the last 5 years. A survey, including a clinical and radiographic examination for caries and gingival health, was carried out on 142 refugees. They were aged from 2 to 18 years and were examined within 6 weeks of arrival in Norway. The mean dmfs score of subjects 2‐5 years old was 23.9, for subjects 6‐11, dmfs was 12.4 and DMFS 7.7, and for subjects 12‐18, DMFS was 20.0. The dmf/DMF scores were mainly composed of caries grades 3 and 4 (dentin caries or caries with pulpal involvement), and teeth missing or indicated for extraction. Only eight subjects had restorations, and these were often of poor quality. All subjects over 6 years had gingivitis (GBI 62%). About 10% had enamel hypoplasias on permanent anterior teeth. Denial abscesses and periapical areas indicated an acute treatment need, and most subjects were in urgent need of restorative treatment. Average time required for treatment of 12‐18‐year‐old patients is estimated to be 7‐10 hours, about four times that required for Norwegian schoolchildren. Dental examination of newly arrived Vietnamese refugees i

摘要:
AbstractThe mean times and order of eruption of primary teeth were determined cross‐sectionally from 1017 Iraqi nursery schoolchildren, ranging in age from 1 to 40 months. No statistical differences were found in the mean ages of eruption between corresponding right and left primary teeth in both sexes. The order of eruption for the maxilla and the mandible was the same in both sexes. In boys teeth erupted earlier than girls except for the maxillary central incisors and the mandible second molar
