摘要:
AbstractThe effect of a school based plaque control programme on restorative dental treatment was investigated over a 4‐yr period. The programme consisted of fortnightly visits to a hygienist during term time for oral hygiene reinforcement and prophylaxis during the first 3 yr. The subjects were girls aged 11–12 yr at baseline and all attended the same school; the present study was concerned with the subjects in both the experimental and control groups who attended the dentist based in the school for restorative care (n= 147 for the first year falling to 108 for the 4‐yr period). During the first year, the subjects treated from the experimental group received significantly fewer restorations than the subjects treated from the control group. This significant difference was not seen in the subsequent 3 yr and the mean number of restorations provided over the 4‐yr period in the experimental and control groups respectively was 5.45 and 6.67. The corresponding 4 yr DFS increments for these groups were 5.56 and 5.52. The anomalous first finding appeared to have been due more of decayed surfaces being present in the control group at baseline. The results for restorative care generally confirmed the ineffectiveness of the programme in preventing caries and the relatively low caries increments reflect the reductions in caries experience occurring in similar communities during the period of th

摘要:
AbstractThe ability of a powered rotary toothbrush to remove 3‐ and 4‐day‐old microbial plaque deposits was evaluated in 10 young adults with healthy gingivae. Using a split mouth technique and a cross‐over experimental design, the powered brush was compared with a conventional hand brush over a 14‐day period. Statistical analysis of the results showed no significant differences between either method of brushing when the whole mouth, maxillary or mandibular arches were compared. Further analysis of the proximal scores again showed no significant differences between the powered brush or handbrush. The majority of the subjects preferred the conventional handbrush to the powe

摘要:
AbstractThe need for complete denture treatment was compared to utilization of complete denture services. To estimate the need for complete denture treatment we used data from the Mini‐Finland Survey which included 3620 persons who were edentulous in one or both jaws. Data about utilization of services was obtained through questionnaires sent to samples of dentists and special dental technicians. Utilization of services was 21.8% of the need assessed with professional criteria and 17.7% of the subjective need. Compared to the subjectively assessed need, utilization of complete denture services was highest among young women and lowest among men aged 60–69 yr. Subjective need for denture services was highest in older groups. From these results we conclude that certain barriers prevent patients from seeking care; and as these barriers are reduced, use of complete denture services may incre

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the quality of amalgam fillings among 20‐yr‐old Helsinki University students. The quality of the fillings was evaluated for the teeth 16 and 46. The marginal adaptation, anatomical form and surface texture of the fillings were evaluated and the filled surfaces were classified as being good, or requiring refinishing or replacement. The age of the fillings and how often they had been replaced were also evaluated from previous records. 47% of the filled surfaces were classified as good, 43% needed to be refinished and 10% needed replacement. The reasons for refinishing a filling were faults in surface texture (61 %), anatomical form (23 %) or marginal adaptation (16%). The reasons for replacing a filling were fractured filling (38%), secondary caries or incorrect marginal adaptation (23%), inadequate anatomical form (13 %) or poor surface texture (26%) which could not be refinished. The mean age of all fillings was 6.6 yr. The mean age of fillings which needed replacement was 7.3 yr. The maxillary first molar had been filled an average of 2.0 times and the mandibular first molar 2.2 times by the age of 20

摘要:
AbstractEleven child skulls were radiographed through a range of 50 degrees by varying the horizontal angulation of the X‐ray beam in steps of 2 or 5 degrees. The changes in the width of overlapping contact images and the ranges through which no overlap occurred were measured. A linear relationship between changes in X‐ray beam angulation and overlap width was found in all the skulls. Using the data it was calculated that for each increase in overlap width of 0.1 mm, 95% of the deviations in X‐ray beam angulation were less than 2.5 degrees. The findings of this study suggested that the positioning of the X‐ray beam so as to cause no overlapping is at best difficult, and at worst impossible. They also emphasize the importance of using identical projections in estimating the progress of carious lesions on radiographs since small changes can cause overlaps. The use of methods that reduce the error in repositioning the X‐ray beam may be important in reducing methodological errors in clinical

摘要:
AbstractThe prevalence of developmental defects of enamel was assessed in 243 children aged 12–14 yr using the FDI Index. The teeth were not cleaned or dried prior to examination for which fibre optic lighting was used. At least one tooth with defective enamel was seen in 63% of children with a demarcated white opacity present in 44% of children. The enamel was abnormal in 11.7% of teeth, diffuse patchy opacities and demarcated while opacities occurring in 4.4 and 4.2%, respectively. Although defects were found most frequently in the maxillary central incisors, the ranking order of prevalence and the distribution for demarcated and diffuse opacities was quite different. Sex, residence, and the common childhood illnesses did not alter the prevalence of defects which was, however, increased significantly in 22 children with a history of a serious illness or accident (0.01>P>0.001). The prevalence of the diffuse opacities was significantly increased with increased exposure to fluoride either in tablets nr in the drinking water (0.01>P>0.001

摘要:
AbstractThe prevalence of oral physiologic pigmentation in three ethnic groups of a total of 2465 Israeli Jews was determined, and the relationship of oral pigmentation to age and sex with in the groups was noted. Results showed the presence of oral pigmentation in 63.6% of the Eastern group, 54.8% of the Sephardic group, and 24.9% of the Ashkenazi group. No indication was found of sex predilection, and no significant trend was evident in the prevalence of pigmentation with relation to age. The leading site of pigmentation among the entire sample was the gingiva, and this finding did not vary with ethnicity.

摘要:
AbstractOf a representative sample of 8000 persons aged 30 and over living in Finland, 3875 users of removable dentures were examined. The condition of the oral mucosa was recorded during clinical examinations. The prevalence of oral mucosal lesions associated with removable dentures was analyzed according to age, sex, place of residence, geographical region of living, and type and location of prosthesis. Lesions were found in about 50% of the denture wearers. Women were affected more often than men. The prevalence of lesions decreased with age and differed slightly according to region of living and place of residence. Compared with the wearing of partial dentures, wearing complete dentures increased the risk of lesions. Only one of the 72 denture users who wore a denture with metallic base plate had oral mucosal lesions associated with wearing a denture.
