SUMMARY.When children are dealt with in the justice system, by the police or the courts, the results are often highly emotionally distressing, and damaging to the true purpose of testimony. This paper describes a training programme of ‘special care questioning’ developed by a police force which employs clinical pychologists. An outline rationale is described, and the results discussed. It concludes that the task of protecting children cannot be the exclusive domain of either Clinical* social service practitioners or legal officers. SUMMARY.With the anticipated introduction of a triple vaccine that protects against measles, mumps and rubella, the proportion of children vaccinated each year will need to rise from 68 per cent to 95 per cent if the target of eliminating measles is to be achieved. This article reviews the morbidity associated with preventable infectious diseases of childhood, discusses possible reasons for inadequate vaccine uptake and suggests ways for improving this situation including the case for school entry legislation.

SUMMARY.This paper has been written for those professional workers who may have to deal with situations involving child sexual abuse, while having only limited knowledge and training.There are two sections. The first examines some of the key issues needed to increase understanding, and includes a preliminary discussion on the emotional impact of sexual abuse on Professional workers. Following a clarification of definitions, family aspects and incidence, this section focuses first on the child victims and then on the perpetrator. Finally, there is an examination of the consequences of child sexual abuse.The second section gives guidance on how a professional worker might respond if confronted with a case—from recognising the signs to facilitating disclosure. Suggestions are made about supporting the child during the investigation and heaving the child afterward

SUMMARY.This article is based on a keynote talk given at a dg seminar onUnder Fives: Special Needs, Special Services?held at the National Children's Bureau in June 1987.The purpose of the seminar is sketched as an introduction. Historical evolution of traditions and practice in early childhood education and in special education are traced and common Principles are identified as a basis for reconciling these traditions to form collective responses to young children's special needs. A number of recent and current initiatives are described which attest to the potential for developing policies on under fives and special needs which epitomise working partnerships between statutory and voluntary services and families.

SUMMARY.Child poverty has been an emotive and political issue for many years. This article sets out to look at the concepts of poverty—both absolute and relative. It then analyses government and political party attitudes to poverty from 1945–70, concluding that little has been achieved, particularly for the poorer and larger. families.
