SUMMARY.This paper explores the relationship between the reading attainment of a group of 8–14 year olds in long‐term foster care and factors in their histories and current home environments. The findings suggest that children's early histories before entry to care may have an effect on their educational attainment in middle childhood. Some amelioration of early childhood experience may be found in a stable foster home placement which has an expectation of permanence. The type of permanent placement seems less important than the expectation of stability. There was no difference in progress between children where the eventual outcome might be adoption or custodianship and those who would remain foster children. SUMMARY.The past decade has shown increased awareness, concern and understanding about the extent of child abuse, particularly sexual abuse, and the caring agencies response to listen to and to support the young victims. This article looks at the response of the police service over that decade to meet such demands and to work jointly and responsively with social services to further the welfare and protection of children. SUMMARY.The children of Santa Ursula, a marginalised area of Mexico City, suffer extreme forms of deprivation both in terms of their material conditions and their social context. The author of this paper describes her study of the children and their mothers, using standard psychological tests. SUMMARY.A particularly problematic aspect of practice is the initial investigation into non‐accidental injury. This article describes a social work approach which will be of interest to other disciplines in seeking to understand social work method. Within a task‐centred framework, the author outlines three major tasks in initial child protection interviews: safeguarding the child, obtaining an explanation, and establishing a working alliance with the parent. SUMMARY.In the previous issue of Children&Society, Marcia Newsome reported on her study of the historical development of care and education of poor children. That paper revealed ideas and attitudes which not only informed the past, but surprisingly, can be seen to underpin many aspects of present day policy and assumptions. The study highlighted the interactions of individuals and groups, showing how personal, religious, political and economic interests affected the development and organisation of institutions caring for children, some influences obvious, others concealed and unintended. Such interests inevitably led to practices far removed from the best interests of the children themselves. This second paper indicates that the lessons which the past provides have not necessarily been learned, and that similar motives and influences are still at work today.
