SUMMARY.In recent years there has been considerable debate about how the education service should provide for children with special educational needs. In arguing for keeping such children in mainstream schools the author begins by focusing upon some of the myths which have developed in the field of special education and which may themselves act as barriers to change. Then a number of critical issues are outlined along with some indications of the kinds of changes in policy and practice which might be required if ‘ordinary schools are to become special’. Particular emphasis is placed upon the important, but neglected, area of policy and directions at the LEA level. SUMMARY.Women who become mothers under the age of 20 are usually thought to he at greater risk of health and social problems. The authors argue that such a prevailing view has become institutionalised in the approaches of practitioners and researchers. They examine the ideological and factual bases of such an attitude towards teenage mothers and conclude that ideology is dominant. Suggestions are made as to how this might be overcome to allow a more balanced approach to research about young motherhood.

SUMMARY.How are we to justify our criticisms of current policies in relation to children? This paper, delivered as the Fourth Brian Jackson Memorial Lecture at Huddersfield Polytechnic on 6 November 1987, argues that we need to address the questions of why we ought to take children's rights seriously and of how this can be done. The article examines the moral grounds for rights for children and concludes by suggesting some institutional changes including the establishment of a Children's Ombudsperson. SUMMARY.This article describes the thinking behind the National Children's Home's (NCH)Children in Dangercampaign which began in 1985. It discusses the difficulties and benefits for a service providing child care voluntary organisation involving itself in social policy campaigning. The reasons behind the campaign are outlined, its implementation and its effects both on the public and the organisation.
