摘要:
SUMMARY.There is growing evidence to demonstrate that children involved in traumatic events suffer prolonged and significant psychological distress although adults have been found to consistently deny, underrate, or fail to recognise their seventy. The significant psychological impact of a road traffic accident upon seven adolescents is described and issues regarding their management that contributed to their distress detailed. Implications for adults and services that have contact with child trauma victims are discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARY.The last fifteen yeas have seen rapid changes in the financial circumstances of households with children. They are increasingly found among those on the lowest incomes and are over‐represented among households dependent on income support for their survival. At the same time, changes in the social security system have left claimant families with greater financial responsibility and reduced access to additional sources of financial support from the state. The article reviews these changes in the economic welfare of households with children, paying particular attention to the circumstances of low‐income families. It looks in turn at trends in household income, at changes in the social security system and at the patterns of debt and unmet needs reported by parents caring for children on low inco

摘要:
SUMMARY.Health and health care are defined as rights in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, although the National Health Service offers universal coverage, it is hugely expensive with growing costs and growing demands made upon it. Rationing is inevitable and priorities must be set. This paper discusses the part that children's rights can play in influencing equitable provision and the quality of care.

摘要:
SUMMARY.Professionals in Britain and many other countries have long been concerned about whether children in need, who have to live away from their parents, are best placed in foster or residential settings. The issue has become particularly significant in recent years in view of the adverse publicity surrounding residential childcare. This paper summarises recent British research findings on the role and impact of foster and residential care for children and young people in need. It demonstrates that research conclusions often do not support commonly held public and professional views, particularly regarding the contribution of residential care.

摘要:
SUMMARY.With the support of the Department of Health, Bristol University is carrying out a small‐scale research study of single‐person adoption. In advance of the findings, the author surveys existing arguments for and against the approval of single people as adoptive parents. The debate raises some larger questions—not simply about adoption and necessary safeguards, but about the nature of the approval process i

摘要:
SUMMARY.This paper reports some results from a study of foster care of young people with severe learning disabilities. It focuses upon the views and experiences of the birth children in foster families. The findings demonstrate how fostering involves everyone in the family, not just the adult carers; and highlight some of the rewards and difficulties of fostering from the birth children's point of view.
