摘要:
SUMMARY.This paper describes an approach to working with parents which emphasises the parents' own learning process and which might be termed ‘developmental partnership’. By this is meant a relationship in which not only are the parents explicitly acknowledged as the primary educators of their own children but also that, through a process of mutual enquiry into the activities and development of these children, parents, educator and children learn and work together. A number of issues are raised about working in ‘developmental partnership’ with parents, including the role of the unconscious in relationships focused upon l

摘要:
SUMMARY.This paper reports results from a study of playgroups in three areas of England. It describes the extent and nature of parent involvement in the study playgroups, and how far this involvement included fathers as well as mothers; examines the relationship between involvement and various socio‐economic characteristics of the parents, to see whether certain groups were more or less likely to be involved in their children's playgroups; and considers attitudes to parent involvement among both mothers and playgroup leaders, and playgroup leaders' experience of involvement, in particular whether they experienced any difficulties in getting or maintaining involvemen

摘要:
SUMMARY.Using the experience of a study of childhood in Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Sweden, this article explores the now common situation of children growing up in two settings: their families and day care centres. In Denmark, where almost all mothers work and where good quality care is widely available, the family and day care centres are seen as having important complementary roles in supporting children's social development. The child learns to both integrate and separate the experience of these two worlds, more or less successfully depending on how well he or she is developing at home, and the relationship between the home and the day care centre. Day care should be seen as a positive support for family life: dual‐socialisation through family and day care is, and will remain, part of the lives of most childre

摘要:
SUMMARY.This article links together the broad coordination debate within the early years field, and how children's needs are conceptualised and defined. It does this in conjunction with an examination of the government's new Under Fives Initiative and the situation of the homeless families that some of the voluntary projects funded under the Initiative are intended to reach. For homeless families, mothers' more holistic perceptions of their children's needs are revealed as providing a good basis for coordination within and between sectors, as opposed to policy, agency and professional definitions of their needs. The latter are being forged and reformulated in the context of increasing service fragmentation, as well as short term government funding for the voluntary sector. Coherence in definitions of needs could provide a pragmatic response to such changes in service provision and funding.

摘要:
SUMMARY.An increasing number of children are affected by the breakup of their parents' relationship and face consequent major changes in their lives. There are strong and compelling reasons for children to be heard when their parents separate or divorce. Family Conciliation Services can provide a forum for children to express themselves. However, in the author's experience in Scotland, practice varies between conciliators about when and whether to include children in the conciliation process. This article discusses some of the thinking and practice about including children in conciliation.

摘要:
