摘要:
SUMMARY.There is a risk that recent concern over child sexual abuse will inhibit those working with children from having appropriate physical contact with the children. The author discusses the importance of touch in children's experience, outlines some dilemmas facing the childcare worker, and suggests a number of specific and general ways in which workers may resolve these difficulties, with special reference to residential childcare

摘要:
SUMMARY.There is a long established link between poverty and child health, both in the United Kingdom and in other countries. In this review of the literature, the author explores the nature of this link. The paper discusses the historical background and briefly reviews the evidence from the developing countries and the controversy surrounding the definition of poverty before examining the association between child health and poverty in the United Kingdom. The author concludes with some suggestions for future research and some thoughts on the implications for doctors working with children

摘要:
SUMMARY.This article draws on NFER/ESRC funded research aimed at reviewing the arrangements for the education of children in care. The study followed up issues raised by Sonia Jackson (seeCHILDREN&SOCIETY, 2:4) and others who were concerned that the educational experiences of children in care were often poor and that one of the main causes was the lack of coordinated approach by the social services, education departments and other agencies. The paper outlines current arrangements, explores the issues and recommends more research and new policies and practices

摘要:
This paper draws on data from a recent study of parents' and health staff views on child health care. The study found that mothers and health visitors held broadly different views on good childcare. In this paper it is argued that these reflect different models of childhood and motherhoodFindings about background were reported and discussed in CHILDREN&SOCIETY 4(2). The study was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and carried out by Berry May all and Marie‐Claude Foster at the Thomas Coram Research Un

摘要:
SUMMARY.Only children are popularly believed to be spoiled, lonely and maladjusted, and few parents in Britain choose to have one child. This article documents existing prejudice against only children and their parents, and contrasts it with the very positive picture given by research. Analysis of data from a large scale survey of 16–17 year olds gives a presentation of the family background of only children in Scotland, and confirms that only children do well. The conflict between popular stereotype and research evidence is discussed, and some possible explanations are considered. The article concludes that the positive research findings on only children should be more widely kno

摘要:
SUMMARY.Three one day workshops for 40 senior clinical staff were held to introduce a new Operational Policy on Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) and to provide them with a teaching package to enable them to run ‘cascade’ teaching sessions for other staff and colleagues. Part I of this paper describes an evaluation of the workshop; Part II describes an evaluation of the cascadeThe workshop evaluation showed that knowledge about CSA and policy issues was already good, but although that knowledge did improve after the workshop, attitudes about sexual behaviour were not changed by the workshop. Evaluation of the cascade also showed an increase in knowledge after the dissemination exer
