Comprehensive rehabilitation of the ostomate involves much more than institutionalized care. Patients are not rehabilitated in institutions, but rather are rehabilitated truly when they can function to their maximum potential as part of their home, family and community.In many cases, it is the responsibility of the nurse to determine whether the ostomate, with or without family help, can function to his maximum potential after leaving the institution. For the patient who cannot, there are a variety of home care services available.Many patients can benefit from professional care after a hospital discharge. Trying to adapt to serious illness, disease, or disability is a difficult task for anyone regardless of educational, social, or economic background.

The continent ileostomy (CI) was pioneered by Dr. Nils Kock of Sweden, and despite its success and acceptance in the United States in the last few years, common knowledge and understanding is still lacking. To promote national education and understanding of this surgery, in March, 1977 the United Ostomy Association (UOA) Board voted to establish a CI Committee whose goals were “the general education and publicity of the CI as a surgical procedure to both the medical profession and the layperson and to provide an information exchange on the surgery among other ostomates.” It was decided that a preliminary step towards these goals could best be accomplished by surveying persons who had undergone the surgery.
