摘要:
I quickly review the successes of quantum chromodynamics. Then I assess the current state of the electroweak theory, making brief comments about the search for the Higgs boson and some of the open issues for the theory. I sketch the problems of mass and mass scales, and point to a speculative link between the question of identity and large extra dimensions. To conclude, I return to QCD and the possibility that its phase structure might inform our understanding of electroweak symmetry breaking. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The record-breaking performance of the LEP accelerator in 1999 opens new discovery frontiers for Higgs searches. Preliminary results are reported from searches for Higgs bosons using the LEP2 dataset at center-of-mass energies up to 202 GeV. No evidence for Higgs signal is observed, and experimental limits on Higgs production are presented. The ultimate Higgs discovery potential of the LEP experiments is extrapolated to the end of the LEP era. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

Preliminary results from a Fermilab study of the sensitivity for Higgs production at the Tevatron in the coming data taking are presented. The study extends existing results by systematically combining results for all decay channels, considering the production of higher mass Higgs bosons and interpreting the results in the context of supersymmetric Higgs production as well as standard model production. In addition new analysis methods are used. These significantly improve sensitivity. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
This talk focuses on two aspects of the search for supersymmetry. First I argue that if the breaking of the electroweak symmetry is indeed explained by supersymmetry, then it is very likely that superpartners will be produced at Fermilab. Second, once superpartners are found we will move to the next stage where we need to learn the implications of how supersymmetry is realized for the underlying theory, e.g. string theory. The connection between data and the underlying theory is via the supersymmetry soft-breaking Lagrangian. Measuring the Lagrangian requires a lepton collider with a polarized beam, above the threshold for producing some of the superpartners. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

There are two basic theoretical approaches to obtaining neutrino mass and mixing. In the minimalist approach, one adds just enough new stuff to the Minimal Standard Model to getm&ngr;≠0andU&agr;i≠1.In the holistic approach, one uses a general framework or principle to enlarge the Minimal Standard Model such that, among other things,m&ngr;≠0andU&agr;i≠1.In both cases, there are important side effects besides neutrino oscillations. I discuss a number of examples, including the possibility of leptogenesis fromRparity nonconservation in supersymmetry. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.
