摘要:
This lecture is intended to be an introduction to the use of feedback control to counteract multibunch instabilities. Furthermore, the intent is to make the most direct connection possible between feedback system design and the linear equations of motion of a single particle in an accelerator. Descriptions of the electronic design and considerations of gain versus stability have been treated in the literature [1,2,3] and will be glossed over in this lecture. The exposition is aimed at an audience with reasonable background in linear charged particle optics and minimal familiarity with circuit theory and electronics design. We begin with a brief description of the sources of instability and a description of the function of a feedback system in terms of the equation of motion of a beam bunch. We will try to list the fundamentals of the design process of a feedback system in such a way as to give the reader a framework within which to evaluate the subsequent material. Section 2 develops simple definitions of feedback system performance parameters: damping time constant, gain, and power requirements. Sections 3 and 4 give a perspective on feedback signal processing, using several betatron damping systems to exemplify time domain signal processing. Section 5 views the signal processing problem in frequency domain, using the CERN PS Booster longitudinal damper as an example.

摘要:
Free‐electron lasers (FELs) are currently under intense research and development throughout the world for a variety of applications. A number of physics issues place limits on the performance of FELs. These include, among others, i) the generation of high quality, high current electron beams, ii) optical guiding of the generated radiation beam, iii) undulator field errors, and iv) the excitation of sideband radiation. The goal of this paper is to review and discuss these FEL physics issues. The most important component of an FEL is a high quality electron beam. For efficient operation the effective electron beam energy spread must be sufficiently small. The effective energy spread is determined by i) transverse beam emittance, ii) undulator transverse spatial gradients, iii) undulator field error effects, iv) beam space‐charge effects, v) intrinsic energy spread, and vi) energy stability. Another important aspect of FEL operation is optical guiding of the generated radiation beam. In many proposed FEL experiments, the short wavelength radiation beam will note be confined by a waveguide structure, and the interaction length is required to be long compared to the free‐space Rayleigh (diffraction) length. Optical guiding of the generated radiation can, therefore, play a central role in the practical utilization of FELs. However, optical guiding imposes limits on several FEL parameters. These, as well as other constraints, will be discussed in detail, and theoretical criteria and numerical simulations will be presented.

摘要:
The concept and development of gyroklystron amplifiers with parameters relevant to providing rf driver tubes for TeV linear colliders is reviewed. Phase noise is shown to be acceptable for the collider application. Recent experimental results on a 3‐cavity, 9.87‐GHz gyroklystron (viz., 24 MW output power in a 1.7‐&mgr;s pulse with 36% efficiency and 33‐dB gain) are presented. These results establish the gyroklystron as a microwave amplifier with uniquely attractive capabilities. Prospects for scaling performance to still higher power, higher frequency and higher gain and efficiency are bright; advanced concepts for scaling are discussed.
