摘要:
This talk reviews some of the basic concepts in cold collisions, and gives examples of calculations directed towards understanding the following areas: (1) collisions of Na atoms trapped in Zeeman components of theF=1hyperfine sublevel, and their control by magnetically-induced Feshbach resonances; (2) elastic and inelastic collisions of Cs atoms in the double spin-polarizedF=4,M=4level; and (3) stimulated Raman photoassociation of two colliding atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to make translationally cold molecules in a selected target level. ©1999 American Institute of Physics.

I consider the analogies and differences between, on the one hand, the BEC alkali gases and, on the other, the superfluid phases of the two helium isotopes,4Heand3He,with particular reference to the phenomena of metastable superflow in4Heand the “internal” Josephson effect in3He.©1999 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
In this paper recent experiments with trapped ions are reviewed. They deal with the spectrum of the resonance fluorescence of a single ion, the ion-trap laser, experiments towards a new frequency standard on the basis of a singleIn+ion, and the investigation of the diffusion of a single ion in a one-dimensional optical lattice. ©1999 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The dynamics of a Rydberg Stark wave packet above the saddle point of the combined Coulomb-electric field potential is investigated by conventional pump-probe techniques and an atomic streak camera. This new device records when the electron is ejected from the autoionizing system. With some modifications this streak camera can also be used to measure the shape of infrared laser pulses with a picosecond time resolution. ©1999 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The interaction of circular Rydberg atoms with a high-quality microwave cavity makes it possible to realize complex quantum state manipulations. The state of an atom can be “copied” onto the cavity. Reversing this operation at a later time with a second atom, we realize an elementary “quantum memory” holding an atomic quantum coherence for a while in a cavity mode. We have also generated two-atom entangled states of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type. At variance with previous experiments, this one implies massive particles in a completely controlled process. These entanglement manipulations can be generalized to more complex or to mesoscopic systems and open the way to new tests of fundamental aspects of the quantum world. ©1999 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Various techniques of atom manipulation with a binary hologram are discussed and demonstrated experimentally. An atomic beam of metastable neon in the1s3state and a SiN thin film with holes that expresses the transmission function of the hologram are used to demonstrate this technique. The gray-scale holography of atoms is demonstrated for the first time. Other possibilities of holographic manipulation of atoms are also discussed. ©1999 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A series of propensity rules for orientation and alignment in electron-atom and ion/atom-atom collisions is presented. The current understanding of the origin and the range of validity of these rules is investigated. It is shown how such an analysis may yield deeper insight into the collision dynamics responsible for electronic excitation and transfer in atomic collision processes. ©1999 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Experiments with spin-polarized beams of electrons and/or targets are shown to provide very detailed tests of state-of-the-art theory, particularly if the spin-polarization of the reaction partners and/or the polarization of light emitted after impact excitation is measured as well. Although recent advances in the numerical simulation of electron-atom collisions, based upon the “convergent close-coupling” (CCC) and the “R-matrix with pseudo-states” (RMPS) methods, produce impressive results for light quasi-one and quasi-two electron targets, there are still many open questions left regarding the treatment of more complex systems as well as the interpretation of some of the results. Key examples are presented to illustrate the current status of theory and experiment in the field, followed by suggestions for future developments. ©1999 American Institute of Physics.
