摘要:
The Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator facility (HERA) consists of two storage rings. In one of them, protons circulate counterclockwise with an energy of 900 GeV, in the other ring electrons or positrons circulate clockwise with an energy of 27.5 GeV. The two rings are brought together in two points to produce collisions. On each of these collision points detectors are placed to study the interaction of electron and protons. HERA offers the possibility of carrying out experiments with polarized beams. The degree of polarization of electrons and/or positrons of up to 60&percent; is very stable. Since 1995 the collaboration HERMES is running an experiment designed to provide information on the spin of the nucleon. A fourth experiment makes use of the proton beam halo to produce B mesons. HERA-B intend to investigate the violation of CP symmetry in the decay of B mesons. Here we try to illustrate concepts of particle physics and the experimental methods used at HERA and do not intend to give an exhaustive summary of the physics program. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Microstrip Gas Chambers (MSGC’s), Small Gap and Groove detectors with an optional GEM foil are a recent development of gaseous micro-pattern detectors providing a cost efficient solution for a tracking detector. They provide good spatial resolution(∼35&hthinsp;&mgr;m)and can operate in high radiation environments (up to∼104&hthinsp;particles/mm2). The laboratory course on micro pattern detectors tried to give an understanding of the layout and basic functioning of these detectors. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
This is the course manual for a laboratory course that was designed to demonstrate a basic technique employed in data acquisition systems for the purpose of reducing deadtime and thereby increasing throughput. A custom CAMAC module was designed and built at Fermilab for use in these measurements. The use of queueing theory to predict the performance of the system is discussed, including some equations which can be used for that purpose. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The present paper describes a laboratory course held at the ICFA’99 Instrumentation School in Istanbul, Turkey. This course intends to introduce position sensitive multianode photomultiplier tubes (Hamamatsu R5900 type M16 and L16). Using a light emitting diode, the student will measure position sensitivity by scanning the light spot across the M16 PMT. The second part of the exercise consists of measuring a diffraction pattern produced by light passing through a slit. For this purpose the L16 PMT is used and the students attention is drawn to the pedagogical problem of wave-particle duality. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The laboratory course consisted of five different mini sessions on various aspects of silicon sensors and related integrated electronics. The course gave a practical approach to the subject in order to give the student some hands-on experience with silicon sensors. Although there was only a short time available for the course, we thought it was more inspiring to have several different experiments rather than one single session going into details in only one subject. The five mini sessions were: 1. Characterization of silicon diodes for particle detection, 2. Study of noise performance of the Viking readout circuit, 3. Study of the position resolution of a silicon microstrip sensor, 4. Study of charge transport in silicon with a fast amplifier, 5. Analyzing pulse height spectra from silicon detectors. The data in the following was obtained during the ICFA school by the students. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Aim of this paper is to give a general idea of the characteristic of a system for medical digital imaging based on a GaAs pixel detector bump-bonded to a VLSI electronic chip. After a discussion on the characteristics of the GaAs detector, and its detection and charge collection efficiency properties, it follows a description of the high-density channel VLSI chip named Photon Counting Chip (PCC). Then, a description of the apparatus used to characterize the detector and to perform electrical measurements is made. Finally are discussed irradiation tests and the laboratory setup used at the laboratory course of the ICFA 99 school. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.
