The evidence for direct lepton production at high energy and large transverse momentum is reviewed. The yields are much higher than predicted by current models. Comparison is made with hadron production at large transverse momenta.

A review of existing data on nucleus‐nucleus collisions at Bevatron‐Bevalac energies (few GeV/nucleon) is given to test to what extent such collisions can be compared to nucleon‐nucleon studies performed at NAL and ISR energies. Data are examined for such phenomena as limiting fragmentation, scaling and factorization of cross‐sections. A brief discussion of experiments—either in progress or about to start, which bear on the question of testing high‐energy interactions models—is included.

This paper reviews recent experimental evidence related to searches for exotic mesons and charmed particles. In addition, evidence for exotic particle exchange is reviewed, and search experiments in progress are discussed. Upper limits of 2&mgr;b to 10&mgr;b have been placed upon exotic meson production in forward processes while limits of 1&mgr;b to 2&mgr;b exist for exotic mesons produced in baryon exchange processes.

Some problems in non‐relativistic QED are discussed from the point of view of radiation reaction. Recent attempts to use the conceptual simplicity of the Heisenberg picture to discuss such problems as the Lamb shift, the ac Stark effect, the electron's g‐factor anomaly, and the point electron self mass are described. Questions of operator ordering, a Markovian approximation, and interpretive problems are mentioned.

We study in turn the quantum theories of an otherwise free electron‐positron field and of a charged pion field in the presence of the electrostatic field of an extended charge distribution of arbitrary strength. In both instances, the standard quantization fails because of an instability of the vacuum as it is usually defined. The character of the instability, different in each case, is analyzed, and it is shown how a consistent quantization can be carried out. The possible observation of the instabilities, which appears feasible for the electron‐positron field, is discussed.
