摘要:
A proposed new heavy ion preinjector for RHIC is described. The progress made at BNL on the development of an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) has increased our confidence that one can build a preinjector meeting RHIC requirements using an EBIS producing intermediate charge state heavy ions. A new RFQ and Linac will be required to accelerate beams from this source to an energy sufficient for injection into the AGS Booster. These are both straightforward devices, very similar to ones already in operation at other laboratories. Injection into the Booster will occur at the same location as the existing heavy ion injection from the Tandem Van de Graaff. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The efficient transformation of radioactive beams by charge breeding devices, will critically influence the lay-out of the post accelerator of presently built first generation radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities as well as new second generation facilities. The size of the post-accelerator needed to bring the unstable nuclei to the energies required to study nuclear reactions depends on the charge state of the radioactive ions. The capability to raise that charge state from 1+ to n+, wherenmay correspond to a charge-to-mass ratio of 0.15 or higher, will therefore produce an enormous reduction in cost as well as the possibility to accelerate heavier masses. Thus the efficiency of the charge breeding scheme in comparison to the stripping scheme will be explored in the frame of the EU-network charge breeding. The two possible charge breeding schemes using either an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) or an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS), the demands to the sources and the present status of existing charge breeders will be discussed. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Light ions in the mass range up to neon may have important advantages in the treatment of certain types of cancer compared to conventional radiation. Any treatment of cancer has the objective to remove or destroy the tumor while preserving at the same time the healthy tissue as much as possible. For comparison, radiological properties of several types of radiation will be considered first; this will be followed with a list of light ion beam parameters needed for the treatment. A short description of operating and planned facilities will then be given, including the Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) option for the ion source in such a facility. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The precision of mass determinations in a Penning trap increases linearly with the charge of the excited ion. The SMILETRAP mass spectrometer at the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory is a hyperboloidal Penning trap operating with highly charged ions delivered from an electron beam ion source. This combination of instruments uses ions in a destructive way and allows exchange of ion species in a few seconds with a total measuring cycle of about 1.5 min, during which the change of magnetic field is negligible. In the trap the cyclotron frequencies of a mass reference ion and the ion of interest are measured by driving their quadrupole frequencies. The principles of a Penning trap are briefly described, in particular, the merits of using highly charged ions. The resonance frequencies are determined by a time-of-flight method. We have shown that this method can reach a mass uncertainty close to 0.1 ppb using selected rather than cooled ions. In this way we have been able to measure the masses of several atoms with uncertainties below 1 ppb (recently a few times 0.1 ppb). The charge states so far used lie in an interval from 1+ to 42+. Experiments are prepared for charged states in the interval 50+ −70+ (lead). The masses of the following atoms are measured with an uncertainty of about 1 ppb or less:1H,3H,3He,4He,22Ne,28Si,36Ar,76Ge,76Se,86Kr,133Cs.©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
This paper gives an introduction into the topic of primary ion sources that can be used to feed ions of normally solid elements into EBIS devices. Starting with a set of typical requirements for primary ion sources, some major types of ion generators are discussed first, with emphasis on their working principles rather than trying to give a fully representative listing of used and proposed generators. Beam-transport issues between primary ion source and EBIS are then examined, and generic characteristics of suitable beam-formation and transport systems are explained. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The study of the different methods of production of highly-charged ions is going to become more important in the coming years, because many projects in Europe, in Japan and in USA will require more intense beams, even one order of magnitude above the ones produced by the existing sources. During the workshop PIBHI2000 at INFN-LNS in Catania, the state-of-the-art of some projects concerning the production of intense highly-charged ion beams (pulsed and dc) was presented. The paper will summarize the most interesting results, with particular emphasis on the recent tests carried out at Catania, where currents above 100 e&mgr;A were obtained for all charge states of Xenon up to 30+(above 500 e&mgr;A were produced forXe20+) by operating the superconducting ECR ion source SERSE at a higher plasma density, produced by 28 GHz microwaves. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.
