Recent and new results are discussed on inelastic electron scattering. The data from H, D cover angles from 4° to 34°, also data from Be, Al, Cu, Au taken at 4° are shown.

Data are presented on the electroproduction reactionse + p ⇒ e + p + Xo⇒ e + &pgr;+ + Xo⇒ e + &pgr;− + X++in the deep inelastic region. The kinematic region covered was0.4 ≤ Q2 ≤ 2.2 (GeV/c)2,2.5 ≤ &ngr; ≤ 7.0 GeV and 4 ≤ s = W2 ≤ 16(GeV)2whereQ2 = electron momentum transfer,&ngr; = 1ab energy loss of the electronands = W2 = invariant (mass)2 of the hadronic final state.

We present data on electroproduction off protons in which a hadron moving in approximately the same direction as the virtual photon is detected. Measurements were made at data points with nominal (Q2,W) values of (0.6,2.68), (1.2,2.68), (2.0,2.68) and (1.2,2.15) in (GeV2,GeV). The virtual photoproduction cross sections for (&pgr;±, K+, p) + Missing Mass are studied as a function of missing mass, Feynman scaling variables, Q2and W. The results suggest a simple scaling behavior for pions. The data for the channel &pgr;+n are used to determine values for the pion form factor. Protons show a simple behavior as a function of Q2but not W. The K+data show that the K+&Sgr;ocross section falls more rapidly than the K+&Lgr; cross sectionas Q2increases. There is evidence for hyperon resonance production in the missing mass distributions.

Data are presented on the electroproduction of hadrons. The virtual photons are in the kinematic range−.25 > q2 > −3.00 (GeV/c)2,6 < W2 < 30 GeV2. Hadrons produced with large laboratory momentum in the direction of the virtual photons are observed. The fraction of elastic &rgr;omesons with longitudinal polarization is too large to support a vector dominance model for deep inelastic electron scattering. An excess of positive relative to negative hadrons is observed both with proton and with neutron targets. Other electroproduction experiments are reviewed. It is noted that as scaling turns on betweenq2 = 0andq2 = −1 GeV2the electroproduced hadrons assume a less diffractive character consistent with the quark parton model.

A summary of a few recent developments in parton dynamics is given. Emphasis is on results forR=&sgr;L/&sgr;T, the ratio of longitudinal to transverse total virtual photoabsorption cross sections, and for high transverse momentum processes.

The implications of recent experimental findings on correlations in rapidity among produced particles are assessed. Present evidence indicates that on the central plateau a short‐range correlation picture is strongly favored over a fragmentation scheme. In search of shortcomings of a naive description of short‐range correlations we push the Mueller‐Regge formalism beyond reasonable bounds of credibility, but on the central plateau no inconsistencies are found.

Some comments and observations are made concerning the subject matter of the Vanderbilt conference: I. The topological cross sections for p‐p and &pgr;‐p interactions—the two‐component picture, quark model expectations, and KNO scaling; II. Inclusive processes—the energy dependences of the different cross sections, the central region and Landau's hydrodynamic model as an alternative to the conventional view; III. Total and elastic cross sections—the rising total cross section, the slope parameter and the ratio of real to imaginary part, asymptotic expectations, the scattering at moderate ∣t∣ values. In addition, some miscellaneous remarks are made on antideuteron production, inelastic proton spectra, phenomena at large transverse momenta, and speculations on future developments.
