摘要:
This article is the summary of the 5-afternoon tutorial on insertions for circular machines. Roughly half the course (Part 1) was spent discussing interaction regions, We start by recapitulating basic beam optics including building blocks. This provides the tools to analyze the basic structure of interaction regions and explore the parameter space. This simple example is then successively refined and made more realistic. Examples of realized interaction regions for both hadron and electron machines are shown and their salient features and differences explained. A brief discussion of solenoid-decoupling brings Part 1 to a close. In Part 2 we discussed various utility sections. Dispersion suppressors are presented in detail discussing the principles as well as the practical implementation of flexible suppressors using LEP as an example. Injection schemes, both single-turn and multi-turn stacking, are presented in depth. The matching of wiggler and undulator insertions and a discussion of the impact of these devices on beam parameters closes out Part 2. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Proceeding from the collision point towards the source, we discuss purpose and design concepts of the various linear-collider subsystems, as well as important mechanisms of emittance dilution, beam diagnostics, and advanced tuning methods. In particular, we address beamstrahlung, linac emittance degradation due to dispersion and wake fields, scaling of damping-ring parameters with collider energy, fast beam-ion and electron-cloud instabilities, coherent synchrotron radiation, and rf guns. Five case studies are examined in detail. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
In this part of the tutorial we present, on one side, a detailed description of some new beam diagnostic devices, and, on the other side, a set of problems regarding the basic operational principles of these devices. The recent developments in accelerator technology tend toward high intensity beams of very small size. This requires nondestructive beam diagnostic tools with high space and time resolution. It is the main reason for returning to the old idea of using an electron beam as a nondestructive beam diagnostic tool [1,2]. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Future high-energy colliders are discussed, in particular lineare+e−colliders,&mgr;+&mgr;−colliders and hadron colliders. The energies of thee+e−colliders are larger than that of the existinge+e−collider LEP. The energies of the very large hadron colliders are larger than that of the LHC being constructed at CERN. Two&mgr;+&mgr;−colliders at 100 and 3000 GeV are included. For all these colliders, parameter lists, topics of R&D, and progress with component tests are discussed. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The importance of experimental studies of antihydrogen and positronium at extremely high precision relates to the fundamental problems of the properties of matter—symmetry (CPT theorem) and the nature of basic interactions (quantum electrodynamics). Generation of antihydrogen and positronium atoms “in-flight,” especially in the form of rather intense and well directed streams, opens new opportunities for experiments, as discussed in this report. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.
