In piping the defects play a key role for determining the life of component. Also the risk for pipe failure combined to the defects has to be taken into account. In this study thermal dynamic load has been applied to austenitic material (AISI 304) in order to introduce dynamic behaviour into the crack. The studied crack (∼20 mm × 7 mm) has been produced by thermal fatigue in advance. Different ultrasonic techniques were used to reveal information from interaction of ultrasonic waves from dynamic behaviour of a crack face in the sonified volume. The ultrasonic probes in the study are typical probes for defect detection and sizing on site inspections This information helps us to understand some effects in nuclear piping such as detection of cracks with special techniques and difficulties in sizing of the cracks in real situations. In this case the material is loaded to exceed the yield strength. The thermal cycles used caused high variations in the temperature scale from 20°C (68 F) to 600°C (1112 F) in the crack volume especially on the crack surface area. These factors cause large stress variations in the vicinity of the crack. Effects which have been detected during analysis from the measurements explain well difficulties in ultrasonic inspections of those materials on site. Experimental work explains reasons why some defects are missed in the real piping. Ultrasonic techniques used are described in details and conclusion for applicability of those techniques has been drawn. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

Recent progress towards updating the Default POD estimates that are used in determining the initial exceedance curves for rotating titanium components intended for aircraft engine use is described. The approach, based on the Re technique used in the generation of the original default POD curves is first described. A modified preliminary POD estimate is then presented based on incorporating new data sets into the analysis. The result predicts a significant shift in the POD curves to larger flaw sizes. However, the data suggest that the Re technique needs modification. Included is an examination of the basic assumption that flaw response is directly proportional to flaw area and the degree to which this is supported by experimental data. Future work will be directed towards development and application of a modified analysis technique. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
This paper will show that increasing the probability of detection (POD), without also increasing the amount of false positives. Three 5MHz straight beam probes were used at linier distances of 22.5mm and 45mm from the transmitter. A V1 steel calibration block was used as an aid to experiment repeatability, and the 2mm notch was utilized as substitute defect. The experiments will show that the diffracted echo signal can be detected using the passive probes. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
In safety critical and non‐routine situations, inspection capability may need to be demonstrated by an independent process of Inspection Qualification (IQ). This process is costly and time consuming. Therefore an approach that could aid in its production would be beneficial. This paper describes the development of interactive software tools empowering the NDT engineer to design and evaluate the capability of an ultrasonic inspection within a single environment. This paper discusses the motivation for the system, the design and implementation of the tools and the benefits it will provide. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

Over the last decade, the ability to simulate the results of NDE has made major strides. A number of tools are now available, in various stages of development, that can accurately predict the results of rather practical measurements made on parts with complex geometries and material properties. This paper documents the results of a discussion session in which ways to best take advantage of this technical capability were considered. Included are considerations of how to most effectively couple to users, points in the life cycle of components when simulations can be most effectively used, the role of models in assessing trade‐offs between various strategies for assuring reliability, and the role of models in documenting the economic benefits of NDE. Also considered are certain strategic issues concerning model development. © 2004 American Institute of Physics
